Description Mixed Media

The fox himself is drawn with Polychromos, coloured pencils. On the background I tried watercolours, but the paper really wasn't right for that, so I drew over it with coloured pencils.

Thanks for your feedback.
Yes, I think you are right, the proportions aren't quite real... Not even little fox babies have such large heads

Hi Fran,

We had talked about  using this mixed  media before. I know you have already evaluated the technique and I could not say anything here you have not already told yourself. lol. This is not really a critique just my thoughts on it.

I do like it very much.  I love the colors you used for the  background.  I think it works really well even if it was the wrong type paper. The fox is beautifully done with great texture and color in the fur.  Love the eyes

I was trying to picture this without the overlay of the pencil strokes.  I honestly think this mixed media would be a fantastic technigue for your work on the right kind of paper.  If you can find a paper that works with both. If that's possible.

I'm thinking that the  oil based pencils would work well on a stiffer paper and you would still get the soft textured fur .  I think it's a technique that is just right for you and definitely worth developing and experimenting with it on other kinds of paper.

Thank you so much for telling me your thoughts on this!
The only watercolour-paper that I have is really strongly textured, which is great for watercolours, and I don't know if that will work with coloured pencils.
Maybe I'll just have to practice more to do good backgrounds with coloured pencils. It was worth a try though.

I wondered about that.  I wasn't sure if it would be possible to do both on the same paper.

Would a smooth heavy card stock work for it. I've seen water colors done on it but not sure if colored pencils work on it.

I used rather thick, heavy paper, weighing 190g/m^2, but the surface gets ruined really quickly by the water, and the colours just don't distribute across the paper.

What kind of paper are you referring to? Could you send me a link perhaps?

I tried it on my card stock and it did not work. It buckled.  There was a member that said they did theirs in water color and colored pencils, but I can't find it in the gallery now . It might have been a member that left the group.
