Study One: Heart Springs . The hideout for Franz Moraine four years ago, the resort town is home to many territorial pokemon, fervently protecting their home. With protection from the teachers, students can safely observe the older, abandoned nests of Beedrill swarms around the surrounding trees. Kazza knows the area too well, but as Kazza helps his field trip group avoid the swarms, 'Rith helps him stay calm.

Looking back, I could have done a lot more with the background elements themselves (more trees! more on the hives!), but I ultimately wanted to focus on the color elements of this. "Why" might take some explanation . . .

. . . One year ago today, BFCC-- that is, Y2-- ended. I made it all the way to the final round, and this . . . this mess was my chosen color scheme. I did not have to limit my color scheme, but between substitute teaching, grad school applications, and honestly something I might pin down as depression, I thought limiting the amount of colors I had to use would help me, as copics running out and keeping track of nine colors for Kazza alone was a constant issue. Besides, I had had a lot of fun and success with limited colors before, especially with my R7. Why wouldn't it work again?

The coloring made my messy scripting and cramped paneling worse. So, so much worse. At many points, the color made things indecipherable, made my lines underneath unseeable and seperate colors indistinguishable . . . but, because I am a traditional artist, I had to keep going and finish shoveling my grave. That, and I started coloring maybe a week and a half before the big deadline.

It took me a while to come to terms with how bad R8 was. I got the plot elements I wanted down on paper, but the "how" . . . Oof. A big part of the reason why I volunteered to be a BFOI mod, actually, came from me wanting to know what I did wrong and how I could improve. Critique is one thing, but seeing the process of giving out critique, seeing where it comes from, is another. And slowly, I understood what I did wrong. It wasn't necessarily the color scheme that was off; it was my use of it. Anything can work if enough time and thought is put into it, and during R8 I was short on both. I did the best I could on R8. And, that's okay. It's okay.

So, long story short, this study was proving to myself that this color scheme works, that the initial idea wasn't a bad one. Was it a good idea for R8? God no; I should have gone with my initial plans of full color or limited the colors around Kazza to emphasize his transformation. But the colors themselves were not evil. Well, all the colors except B12, Ice Blue. It was one of the lightest blues Hobby Lobby had but was almost identical with BG02, New Blue (Kazza's psychic color). B12 is Pure Evil and shall never be used again.
