"Son, what did I tell you about stacking up all your schoolbooks in the middle of the living room?"

"But Dad, I am in de middle of a verrry important experiment dat requires me to stand at dees precise location to generate a spontaneous magnetic field dat weel greatly advance de science of---"

"Riiight, riiight, sciiience and stuff." Dad interjected glibly. "Y'know, your sister is thinking of going out for the school baseball team. She's turning out to be a better boy than you, son," he said stingingly.

But Dexter was busy writing out calculations. It was really complex stuff, stuff that he didn't understand nor cared about. His voice got sterner. "Dexter, are you listening to me?" he folded his hairy arms--arms that had thrown many a bowling ball, baseball, and snowball.

"Yes, Dad..I will put de books away after just one more equation..."

"For Pete's sake, Dexter, do you have to stick out like a sore thumb?!" yelled Dad. Surprised, Dexter dropped his protractor and other math implements and fell on the edge of the stack of books. "You're always indoors, you wear that labcoat everywhere, you don't talk like the other kids--" Dad sighed in frustration. "Your Mom and I are proud that you're smart and all, but sometimes we wish you were a little more--y'know, average."

"But Dad, de very defineeetion of being a genius is dat one cannot be average.." protested Dexter. His glasses had fallen off from falling on the stack of books, and Dad softened a little. He picked up his son's glasses and handed them back to him and sighed.

"I guess you're right, son. I just don't want you to have too a hard time of it, is all. Here, I got something that might help..and no worries, it's not a baseball mitt." He reached behind his back, and pulled out a dusty VHS tape.

"Lurrn a meedwesterrrn accent?' read Dexter, confused. "Dat is a type of English---but I already knowww American English, Dad. Why do I need this---is this a Video Home System tape? I must convert this to digital format immeeediately, no recording should be archived in this preemitive form---heyyyyyy...why do youuuu have a tape for language learning, Dad?"

"Well Dexter--" Dad sighed as if loathe to give up a well-guarded secret. "---It's because I used to have an accent, too." Where'd you think you got yours?" Dad winked secretively.

Dexter smiled a happy surprised smile, in newfound awe of his average, simple, sports-loving and science-hating dad. But then he got confused.

"Why did you loooose your accent, Dad?"

"Why, to fit in with the neighbors, of course!!" Dad replied in his cheery, simple way. Then his voice suddenly darkened, and he dropped the Midwestern accent---to still another kind of American English accent, an accent that made dumb Dad sound suddenly wise...and weary. "Classmates didn't like foreigners that much, especially when the foreigners were from Russia." He immediately jumped back into the Midwestern accent, his tone once again cheerful, light, and dim-witted. "But that's ancient history---and history is boring, even more boring than science! Now make sure you listen to that tape, alright?" Dad left, and Dexter held the tape in his lab glove. He was disappointed, now that Dad was dumb again. The time for father-son bonding had passed, and he had left the room. Dexter's eyes narrowed with defiance.

"Sorry father, I have absoluuutely no intention of diminishing my genius by loosing my accent." A sad look crossed his face. "Dad lost his accent because he needed to assiiimilate. But I, Dexter, Boy Genius, will use Science!!! to triumph over de need to assimilate..." Yet he couldn't bring himself to dispose of the tape, so after converting the tape to an up-to-date digital format, he merely put it in storage, and after that continued with his electromagnetic field experiments.
