Previous Roundup #WritersInk
Every week, we collect and feature the outstanding submissions to our gallery. If you're looking for quality literature to read, start here!
Each item is hand-picked by our admins and presented with a small introduction (we think this makes browsing literature easier). We don't seek perfection: we just choose interesting work and share it for critique, appreciation and encouragement.
Once again, it seems, death preoccupies our selection of outstanding literature from this week's submissions. Luckily, we've found a gem from way back to remind us of how good life can be. Won't you join us in another Weekly Round-up?
This Week's Highlights
His Very Own Meadow by laurotica
The problem with old haunts is they they tend to be filled with ghosts from the past.
A darkly enigmatic piece, cleverly laced with subtle melancholy. It focuses on how a place can stay exactly the same over a long period of time, and yet we can change so much. The piece stands out because it balances story-telling with exposition so well - allowing the reader to uncover the plot for themselves.
I was a hero, you know by lizziebydesign
A nurse is surprised when an elderly patient rasps into life and starts talking to her. But her curiosity is drawn as the cankerous old man starts to reveal more about his life.
Like the young protagonist of this piece, we're sure you'll be drawn in by the slow revea lof this self-described "hero"'s story. This is a well-written short, driven by careful control of suspense and the exploration of interesting themes.
Monochromatization by nawkaman
Peaceful, harmonius poetry - with just a touch of sadness.
It's often fascinating how often mundane subjects can inspire the most beautiful words. The inspiration for this piece lies in the observation that the author's eyes have perhaps lost some of the colour. How lucky for us that his words have lost none of their lustre - this piece really stood out this week.
From the Archive
We love our old deviations just as much as our new ones. From time to time, we like pull out an old gem that's been lost in the depths of our gallery and feature it in this space.
Something to share by Faraleigh
A life-affirming memoir.
This biographical piece is written with honestly, bravery, and a wonderful appreciation for the vibrancy of life. And as such, it makes a great counter-point to the rest of this week's selection! It hits the ground running with a powerful opening line, but swiftly evolves into something beautiful and inspiring.
