Description
The Southern Pied Babbler, Turdoides bicolor, is perhaps the most striking African babbler species with its bold black-and-white plumage. This bird lives in groups and has very sophisticated social behaviour. In each flock, only the dominant pair breeds. The other adults all help with raising the chicks! Chicks that grow up, may stay with the flock or fly off to try to join others. Babblers are known for their loud, mocking calls. This species lives in open, dry woodland and savannah in Southern Africa, being particularly associated with Camel Thorns, Vachellia erioloba. There is also a Northern Pied Babbler in Tanzania and Kenya, which is brown and white.
