Dry. Barren. Searing. Emblazoned in the scarlet hues from the dying sky, the outside world truly looked like a hellscape. The air shimmered with the heat which had been baked into the cracked ground like an oven, giving an almost unnatural feel to the darkening landscape. Long, dark shadows fell upon the ground and stretched for long distances, including the great cliff faces which surrounded this wasteland, blocking off any winds or rains to come across and bring relief.

In spite of how hellish and empty this place was, a lone figure could be seen trudging across the dry basin. Hunched over, claw-tipped, and scarred, also dipped in the darkness of dusk, this creature could be mistaken at first glance as a harbinger of destruction and unknowable terror. Upon further glance, the more familiar shape of a female lion came forward, carrying a little bundle of fur in her mouth.

The dried, cracked soil poked against her worn paw pads, the heat soaking through her legs and draining all energy and strength from her weary boned. Nevertheless, she trudged forth, the blazing air billowing up from the scorched earth and blanketing her line of vision with ripples of heat. Feverish breaths slithered out of her nostrils, eyes partially closed to look through the oven of a landscape.

Straight ahead she found her partial salvation from the heat. Past the towering termite mounds and over some more scorching earth came into view an assortment of rocks, slanted and toppled over each other. The dark entrance enticed her with the promise of shade and cooler temperatures, and the scent of lionesses nearby assured her that this would be the last time she would go out today.

Her pace increased slightly as she carried the barely toddler lioness in her maw towards the natural dugout, wishing to cool down and escape from the world for the rest of the day.
