The things you can do with a single layer. I'm too spoiled by multiple layers to even try a single-layer computer drawing anymore.

This is simply stunning. Love the layout, the coloring, the atmosphere. Everything! Thank you.

Painter Classic forces one to work on a single layer, no choice about it. Closest you can get to layers is masking, which I use sometimes to separate the character from the background. In a way, it's more like using real media, and the artist has to use the program to its full extent. But there are drawbacks, mainly having to do with less flexibility and less ability to correct errors.

I finally got Photoshop Elements, and wow, I love the layers. I'm working on my first Photoshop digital illustration at the moment and taking advantage of everything layers have to offer. It's a nice change!

You're welcome! It was a blast to paint.

Layers, they spoil you so. Them and the ability to "undo" a mistake. Oh, computer art, how unlike real media you can be.

I'm not sure I've played around much with Painter's layer masking abilities. Most cases, I either create a new layer or take it to Photoshop (since I understand layer workings there better). Must tinker.

I wish paper came with an undo button. Or save points. Fewer "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" moments with digital art, that's for sure.

Masking in Classic is all manual, but once you trap an area in a mask, you can work on that area alone and then invert the mask to work outside the area. It works pretty much the same way mask gel does in real life.

Only fewer moments if you don't have pictophage Painter deciding to have a nom moment on your work, that is. But, yes, many times in real media have I looked for the undo button only to be sadly disappointed.

Ah. I can see where that would help make up for the lack of layers a bit. Not completely, but a bit.

Ugh, true that about pictophagic programs. Pretty sure that every art program I've ever had has crashed on me at least once, eating my WIPs. Except for Paint Tool SAI, I think... that program has been surprisingly stable. Speaking of SAI, ever given it a try? You might enjoy the ink tool, which is SAI's best selling point.

It helps when throwing around things like the watercolor spatter tool, that's for sure.
