Description Hmmm, well, errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrr, uummmm, well. and that concludes my speech . HAH!.

yea, proud of this one. I used a shade of brown as the main base colour, instead of my usual dark blue. A best comparison would be "The Overseer", where you can see the blue hue. I had just realised i needed to change something as someone suggested that all the colours, through out my latest pieces, were similar . Although it was a compliment on persons behalf, i felt i needed to change something in the process. Hopefully it was enough.

story, well i can say inspiriation came from the worrying signs of global warming, Specifically how it was affecting the Himilayan mountains which i saw in a recent news report. All the glaciers were melting and had left some 2000 miniature lakes way up in the mountains. The sad side of it is the local people are under great threat as these lakes pour over and create great flooding. It also insinuated that it was the people of the wests fault, being the greatest polluters, no doubt on that one!.

the giant looming creature is a sci-fi version of mother nature BTW .

I do worry about global warming, I think this past year is only a small sample of whats to come (20 powerfull hurricanes anyone?) I often wonder what the Earth will be like in 30 odd years time and wether i would want to bring children into it. Certainly by the time i am 50, some serious shit will be going down.

of course these are just thoughts, I am renowned for thinking too much ahaha.

Hope you enjoy my latest offering, people.

I agree. I partially scared at the thought of how the world will be in 30 years. I choose not to think of it, but it still worms its way in sometimes.

On with the art compliments! Yet again, beautiful ^^ And so detailed! I see a bunny, a deer, a boat, creatures on the side of the mountain. And so many colors! Your work will never cease to amaze me =3

It's beautiful Marley. I like the variety of colour I also share your worries. It is pretty frustrating to bend over backwards to be good to mother nature, recycle, reuse, compost, etc. But have the powers that be just stomp right over all the little people's efforts in the name of progress and $$$. Tis sad.

Did you hear that they are trying to push a bill through that will allow oil drilling in the alaskan wildlife preserves? Makes me want to tear my hair out :/

Yep, tis the govt. What can ya do other than vote for the other guy? I just wish they would put all their millions and billions into financing new methods of transportation, like making electric cars affordable for the average consumer so we don't need to rely on oil rich countries, or even have to think about drilling in wildlife preserves. Seems silly to me.

It's sad, your government doesn't place it's people first (mind you, which one does these days). Thats blatant money grabbing. Certainly, puts Bill Clintons impeachable offense into perspective, doesn't it?...

Hey, stuffs that I'm going to say are probably said a few hundreds time before me, but I'm sure you can't get bored of it.

The structure is definately very eye-catchy, the design as well as the colors chosen. You could feel the gigantic size of it, that's for sure.
While this is your new take of approach, it still looks and feel very much to your own style of your older pieces. Kudos on those too.

But one thing that's not perfect would be the trees, on first impression at least. IMO, the colors of the tree looks too vibrant or too bright. The upper tips of the frontmost trees and the one to the left has, imo, the right contrast, but they seems to wash out as it moves to the ground.

Hmm, but then after longer inspectation, it does strike a balance with the background (the lake and the structure around it and the far sandy dune), both have light colors, which helps bring focus to the structure itself. My 2 cents.

It's still looking good tho.

Thank ya for the thoughtful crit, firedude*. Absolutely, those trees were tough. It's possibly my second time I illustrated em, which is bloody sad on my part to be sure. What i did do is lace the trees with an ambient light, just to separate the fore from the background trees, only thing i could figure at the time, which is why the ones in the background almost glow. An excellent spend of 2 cents though, i always appreciate them (if delivered correctly that is ).

Many thanks mate.

Definitely a change in terms of color scheme (I personally like the blue better), but its still your usual high quality of work. And a sci-fi version of mother nature? It certainly looks impressive, with the sunlight streaming from behind it, its appearance from the cloud, and that center bulge in the craft resembles a bearded face (making it look old and wise).

You'll have to excuse that last sentence, english essays make me see symbolism in everything, whether or not it exists. And as for global warming, yeah, its a problem (Katrina anyone?), but I doubt you'll convince millions of people worldwide to change their lifestyle to stop it. Now a days, its not a problem unless it directly affects you, so most people won't even recycle (which really doesn't take too much effort).

Great colors.

I really like how your expansion of the color pallette brought an extra dimension to this piece. It's now both otherworldly (as usual), and Earthly at the same time.

I also agree with Kyre--the trees seem a little too "typical" next to that kind of structure, and very green, maybe too green.

Your message is great. We all could use greater environmental awareness. Too many times people get too caught up in the here and now, or their own visions of here and now, that they don't see what it can do to us down the road.

And cheers about the message, thats greatly appreciated.

You're welcome. Hey, if you really had a reason for the trees, I can understand that. Good that you see where the colors could've needed help. I always think it a good sign when someone looks at critique and goes "Yeah, maybe..."

But hey, you're just "branching out" as it were. I'll probably just cut you slack there.

Good luck with the next branching-out piece.

Don't worry about shit you can't control, man. Just ride with it and enjoy

As for the picture, I love it. It's nice to see that you've expanded your colour pallate, and I love the little flying creatures in the distance. But the looming figure is just so beautiful - you've done an amazing job of making it flow between looming-figure and cliff-side-sci-fi-fortress really well
Your trees need work though. They look very...triangular... or do trees look like that in NZ? They're also a crazy hyper-green colour. More of an olive-green might make them look more realistic? (Or would that make them look odd against such a pastel landscape?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thraxllisylia In reply to Kyre [2005-12-17 05:17:08 +0000 UTC]

Hi Kyre, thank you so much for the compliment, it's really encouraging. You are correct on the trees, and it stems from the initial sketch. The proportions were really highlighted once i started rendering. As for the triangular ness, that comes from living on the marine parade in my old hometown of napier, where there is about 2 kilometer of norfolk island pine.
[link]

I guess that kinda stuck ^^*. Greens, again, you're right. They kinda ended up like that after i laced them with a gentle atmospheric gradient. For me it was just trying to get the distant ones to be separated from the fore-ground tree. They certainly were the toughest part of this image, I'm sure I'll get em right next time .

Thanks for the awesome compliment.

oh weird!! The NOrfolks there are SO triangular! We have one in our livingroom, but it's doesn't look anything like those pictures. Maybe it's just cos it's still young (6 feet ish).
