Ah, you like it? I used GIMP (cheap as free and it still does layers). The stars in the background are a layer that was Picked and then had the Sparkle filter applied. The nebulae is a layer with the Plasma filter run on it, after which I used the Select By Color tool and feathering to grab a big swatch of it and clear it out, after which I changed the layer to Add (so the stars shine through) and then played with the color balance until I liked it.

Like Photoshop, only free and with half the features you don't need cut out.
