My grandmother passed away earlier this week at 96 years old, after days surrounded by her children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She died peacefully, in the midst of all the love she had cultivated in her long life.
It was the best and most beautiful death I could ever have wished for her. Despite that, her loss still echoes profoundly through our family. She will be missed so, so dearly. She has been present in my life since the day I was born. She was in the hospital with my mom while she delivered me, and I’ve had a close bond with her ever since.
What I will remember her most for is her unfaltering kindness. She was sharp and witty to the last, always able to crack a joke, always up to date on current events. She cared deeply about justice and always managed to stay educated on what was happening in the world. She had a deep presence in the lives of all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Most of all, I feel so lucky to have known her. My mom was the youngest of her six children, and I myself was born very late in my mom’s life. I’m younger than one of my grandmother’s great-grandchildren. The fact that she has been a constant presence in my life for the past 23 years is such a gift.
I will continue to honor her life and the things she taught me until the day I die.
