A great example of using reference pieces but taking it a step further. I love how you made the poses more dynamic.

The pose you drew aren't identical with the original. This is not meant as critique (I see from your other arts that you can draw), but I see often that practice sketches are never faithful with the original image, so I want just to know why.
(I also ask this because I'm used to work over and ower again on my sketches to make them match with the original picture, and now I start to doubt that is just a waste of time)

Hi Alice, most of my anatomy practice is really a practice in gesture and not replication. But replication is good for developing line control. I want to improve my gesture so that my poses look more appealing and so I learn more about the movement/anatomy to build my mental vocabulary of poses. Hope that helps!

I see. I should do this kind of practice too, but i'm stuck in the idea that different=wrong, so if my drawing (even if is a sketch) doesn't match with the original picture, I'm not happy.
Now I try to copy from life, where is harder to see if a drawing match completely with the original picture, and I have to be happy as long as my drawing holds enough closeness to the original object/animal.

I love the way you push the images to make them more dynamic.

So weird seeing other people use the pics I practise from. Dunno why! You do them justice.

I think that the legs in the secon pic are a little short, but I think this is amazing!

Hey there, thanks. It was intentional for a cartoony effect. It's not like I was somehow able to draw the legs in the first pic true-to-scale and wasn't able to manage it in the second, haha!

MJ Ranum is credited on most of the photos on pixelovely

That's a relief. OTL I always thought the site had used its own hired models. (I'm guessing MJ Ranum did the photographing for them?)

I don't think he was hired by them, they simply obtained permission to host a number of his images on their site. This FAQ might answer your questions: artists.pixelovely.com/faq/#se…

You made the version where he's swinging the ax look more life-like and fluid than the actual photo somehow. The original he's just holding it over his shoulder, in yours there is some weight and movement, and it's awesome!
