Description
I would really like some suggestions on this or anything you would like to add about adopts!! Thnak you
Disclaimer: Im not an expert at this stuff Ive just payed attention to what sells and what doesnt and how people interact in the adopt community.
HOW TO BEGIN (what you need to know)
So you wanna start making adopts huh? Well before you start its important to know some very important things//
- Adopts will not always sell right away
Not all the time will your adopts sell for a good price / sell at all. This is not because you are a horrible artist or because your design skills are not good. A lot of the times its because the people who watch you might not be looking for adopts because that's not what they were watching for in the first place. Do not get discouraged! You may need to start small before you start making it big! Like selling your adopts for cheap or even free (depending on your situation) and be sure to advertise the heck out of that stuff!!
This is a big one here! Tos (terms of service) will protect you from people who want to run you over and jip you of your money (aka: making profit off of your creations, stealing your adopts, basically doing things that you do not want them to do). If you dont want someone reselling the adopt they purchased from you and do not put it in your tos someone could simply say you didnt put it in your rules and they could get away with it. But if you put you TOS / Rules in the description of your adopt there is no reason for them to say stuff like that and you can call them out or ask to reverse the damage. Your TOS should not be messy and should be easy to understand. Heres a good example of thorough TOS. You are free to copy and paste that for your own tos and edit it the way you want it to be
Understand what you are getting into. Adopts can be frustrating and people can steal from you. Making adopts also means you are ready for anyone to do these things to you. Know how to prevent it, know how to deal with it. All of these things will be gone into in this journal.
Do's n Dont's
DO:
- Make original adopts that you have fun making
- understand your adopts will not always sell and try to be okay with that
- Make some understandable rules/ a TOS
- have fun
- do adopts for points or money or trade or even free/DTA/WTA
- Be kind to people
- HAVE FUN SERIOUSLY DO NOT MAKE THIS DIFFICULT OR ELSE YOU WONT GET FAR AND IT WILL BE FRUSTRATING....
DONT:
- color pick from other adopts, steal adopts, trace, etc
- throw a fit every time you cant sell something (can scare people off honestly)
- make a TOS that is confusing and/or difficult to follow
- guilt trip people into purchasing your adopts
Setting up the Adopt
For Auctions:
- title should say "OPEN" or "ADOPT" or " AUCTION" in it somehwere
- description should contain the starting bid, the minimum increase(not required), the autobuy (not required)
- description should contain how you would like the auction to go (aka either replying to a "bid here comment", creating a bidding chain)
- description should have your rules/tos linked
- in the comment section you can make a "bid here" comment and feature it with the little edit icon on the right side of the comment. This is where people can start bidding and create a chain
- TIP: sb should be the lowest you would take for the adopt, min should be half of that, ab should be to encourage bidding (rather high)
- TIP: if you see 1 or more people place a bid, tell the 2nd commenter to reply to the new highest bidder, and then hide their comment
- TIP: id suggest no fighting to go on in the comment section. It can really get fiesty
- TIP: put "CLOSED" in the title when the adopt has been sold
For Set Price:
- title should say "OPEN" or "ADOPT" or "SETPRICE" in it somewhere
- description should have the desired price
- description should have your rules/tos linked
- TIP: feature the comment that is claiming the adopt
- TIP: put "CLOSED" in the title when the adopt has been sold
For Offer to adopt:
- title should say "OPEN" or "ADOPT" or "OTA" in it somewhere
- description should have the lowest price you take
- OTA's can be points, paypal, art, customs, etc (anything you want from other people!)
- TIP: feature comments you like or decline offers constantly
- TIP: dont allow a bid chain especially if you are wanting to receive art
- TIP: put "CLOSED" in the title when the adopt has been sold
For Draw to Adopts/Write to Adopts:
- Title should say "DTA" or "WTA"
- description should have all of your rules for the DTA/WTA and what you are seeking for the winner (effort etc)
- TIP: you should at least give everyone a month to complete the adopt in my opinion
- TIP: announce the winner in a JOURNAL for neatness
- TIP: put entries in a favorite folder or ask them to comment their entries in order to keep tidy
For Raffle adopts:
- title should say "RAFFLE"
- description should have all of your rules for the raffle
- TIP: you should use random.org which can randomize the raffle winner

Treating your Customers
I need a better title for this but//// This is basically going over kind things to do for your customers and how to do good buisiness.
This is important for pretty much any business and job you own. Always put the customer before you in any situation that isn't against your TOS / Rules. An example of this; Say you just put an adopt up for $20 and someone comments to purchase, but right after that someone comments saying they want to buy the adopt for more than $20. Unless you have stated you are looking for OFFERS then you would accept the first comment otherwise it is unfair.
this should go without saying. Being overal kind and lively with your customers is a must. This will bring in other customers and keep you looking bright and shiny! Good customer service is KEY.
- Be Patient (to an extent)
Sometime it takes a moment for your buyers to send the currency, make a decision on if they want to buy or not, and even deciding between the currency they want to use. For this you must be somewhat patient with your customers but KNOW YOUR LIMITS. For example if its been a day you shouldnt be getting angry with the customer. Instead give them a little heads up in case they forgot or they got busy, However if you have been waiting a long time and the customer is even showing activity you should be a little more firm and warn them they could be blacklisted for not paying.

Advertising Advertising is a very important thing for your adopts especially when you are just beginning.
One of the best ways to sell your adopts is through deviantart groups and you can add your adopts in as many as you want! heres all of the groups you could add in: groups.deviantart.com/?qh=&…
To an extent. You can update your deviation to get your watchers to see the adopts you made. This works good since not everyone may live in the same time zone as you and might miss your adopts in the midst of their messages. Just be sure you arent crazily updating your adopts like every hour because this can annoy people and clog up their deviations. Try to update them every 4-8 hours.
- Advertising on other websites
While I don't use this method, if you have other people following you on other social media websites you should try advertising your adopts there.
DO NOT:- ADVERTISE ON OTHER PEOPLE'S PAGES, GROUPS, ETC....this is very rude. Do not do it unless you have strict permission on the person's page/group page.
Creating and Being Inspiredheres some tips and things to get inspired from
this is a good one!! Using pallets helps when you are stuck on designing. Try to use them as sparingly as you can and try not to reuse them. Heres some great websites:
coolors.co/
www.colourlovers.com/
www.design-seeds.com/
Another great one that can create even more original adopts. You can use websites like tumblr, google images, and photobucket. You can use magnificent images to get inspiration for your adopts.
