how did you get the pebbled bubbly texture of the background?

The hard way. >.<; Lolz.
I hand painted in the shadows around the pebbles...

A much better way to do it that I would most likely use if I redid the piece now, would be to spatter some large drops of rubbing alcohol onto your WET watercolor - it pushes the pigment out in 'bubble' shapes. Once it dries you can do several more layers to build up color & then work wet on dry to pull out the shaping for your pebbles.

Learning to 'let go' of some of your control over the paint is hard to get yourself to do if you are used to painting with less-random mediums. Watercolor is amazing in that if you really learn how to work with it well, it practically paints itself. <3 has some wonderful techniques I'm studying intently lately. I highly recommend her books on watercolor if you are learning.

Its been a long time since I've experimented with water colors, more out of lack of time and having too much fun with acrylics. My personal favorite was always salt with watercolor. made so many pretty shapes. But I really like the idea of using alcohol to create a bubble effect. When I initially saw your piece, for some reason I was under the impression that it was done with "frothy" paint. I found an article using stumbleupon that described a project where tempra paint was mixed with water and kids blew bubbles in the mixture and then scooped the frothy bubbles up onto the paper make a pebbled effect. I wonder if that would work with water colors?

Being so water-soluble I'm not sure if soap bubbles would work quite the same with watercolors or not. But it might be worth the experimentation!

I do love using salt with watercolors as well. <3 It has such a lovely effect. I keep a few different sizes of salt around my art desk for the fun of the different patterns it can make.

^.^' Some of it was too big to get a good scan (my scanner is rather small) and my camera doesn't take quite decent enough quality for me to be willing to use it for prints.... *lol* but yes, you are right. I know I should, I just haven't yet.
