*Personality: A gentle giant in general. Boris is kindly and loves all things dainty and small (and this can cover from ‘tiny’ to simply ‘smaller than him’). He is exceptionally friendly and willing to befriend anyone who doesn’t offer to maul him at first glance, and will suffer quietly any abuse from others, merely putting his head down and tolerating it until his patience snaps and he finds himself setting loose with both hinds and whirling to set his teeth into the assaulter to inform them in no uncertain terms he has had enough and will tolerate it no longer. Completely willing to cry peace if the offender is willing, but if not will defend himself and then leave.
*History: Boris is born from a tryst between a Sugarbrush draft mare named Collette and a Mammoth Jack whom Boris was never permitted to learn the name of. The breeding occurred before she was claimed by the Lead of her eventual herd. The lead stallion took personal offense to the idea any mare he claimed having such relations with a Donkey of all things and chose to essentially ignore Boris and his mother, pushing them to the edges of the herd, but not ejecting them entirely. Last to drink, last to settle in to feed, last to sleep. As a near yearling, the big eared colt was playing by the edge of the forest when a large bear burst out of the bushes, chasing the colt towards a section of heavily rocky ground. As the bear must've expected, the colt had trouble managing the rocks and tumbled head over heels. The bear was on him in seconds but the dam of the colt flew in set her teeth to the haunches of the bear, resulting in a miss-aimed bite that landed on the colt's tail. The bear's strong bite broke the delicate bones in the colt's tail, but the distraction his mother provided gave him a chance to scramble up and dash back up the hill. The bear, looking for no fights with an adult the size of Collette fled, returning to the forest. Resulting from the terrible crushing bite to the colt's tail, he lost the bulk of it and only has a brush of a tail as a result.
The lead chose to call Boris ‘Burro’ for the colts father when he had to refer to him, never bothering to actually use the colt's name, and Boris tolerated such because all the little chap wanted was to make his ‘sire’ proud. Nothing was ever good enough, however. As he approached three years old, the lead began to become aggressive towards him - more than the usual requirements to send a colt out, but simple viciousness anytime Boris was too near. The entire herd had long since learned to pretend he didn't exist, but even they were appalled at such animosity when Boris had always gone out of his way to offer sneaky assistance. - He would stay up later than his dam or the others, even later than the stallion, keeping his exceptionally large ears on a swivel. Often the first to alert the herd to potential danger with his noisy and rather alarming brays - even chasing off what his gangly youth could manage. He was a good lad, and despite the rejection of his herd he was as loyal as he could be.
The winter of his third year his dam died, having insisted he eat the bulk of grazing they managed to find in the snow she was weaker than she knew. She simply went to sleep at his side during a blizzard, as was their custom, and her life slipped away during the night. The discovery of the dead mare prompted the Lead to abruptly eject the distraught colt out of the herd properly, with not a kind word permitted among the herd.
For quite some time, the rangy colt was beside himself with grief but one rainy day came upon another colt who was freshly cast out as well, and the two started roaming together, both eventually losing their heart aches as sparring and mares became of more pointed interest to them. Eventually both Boris and his friend found a proper bachelor group and joined, but soon the other colts found themselves mares and it is just Boris now.
