"It's not that far anymore." Calian reached out his arm to help Adam up. The last marker was just in front of them. From there, it was a straight flat route to the cabin shelter.
"Taking me up on the hand holding after all, huh?" Adam squeezed out the words along with his last breath. The boy was wheezing yet his mouth would not shut.
"Do you need it or not." A simple question, little space for tangents. A wandering mind needed a narrow focus. Calian had learned that the hard way with Vael. When there was a task at hand, there was no space for ever-winding conversation.
"It's not that I don't want to take you up on the offer, big guy, but I am perfectly capable of climbing up that hill. You-, you just need to give me a breather. I am catching a breather right now, as we speak, as a matter of fact. I'm gonna be up there in no time. You won't even see me coming."
That would have meant a no in a Vael dictionary. Calian turned around and started walking past the marker at a slower pace. This final incline could indeed be a killer for a city raised fellow. Still, he could not help but smile at Adam's sense of self-reliance.
"No need to wait up on me, I'll be with you in a moment!", he heard from behind his back.
Calian rolled his eyes. "You won't catch your breath if you're releasing it as it comes."

Enjoyment task for Calian's round in OC-training ! I am very late due to vacation and some health issues, but I made it and that makes me happy.
I had the honor to pair up for this task with the very amazing ItikDuck . We sent our boys on some terrible adventures that involved ghost hunting and running away from not so incorporeal ghosts. To ensure their safety, Calian took Adam on a small orienteering run through some high-heel-proof terrains of Duine Vale.
Calian would like to make a disclaimer that he would never actively get a city youth in any kind of danger from exposure. That being said, I think he might sometimes overestimate his own imagination about the risks of getting lost in the wilderness, since it barely ever happens to him. Not all those who wander are lost, and all that jazz. He most definitely has enough firewood and supplies in their cabin of destination so that helps. Adam can be sure there's a warm hearth and a meal ahead of them. I can imagine Calian could also answer a couple of questions about the history of the area, should Adam inquire. Not that Cal is big on storytelling, but he can answer questions.
Either way, I had a blast with these two and I sure hope Adam enjoyed this hike as much as I enjoyed drawing his silly little face.

Again thank you for letting me borrow Adam for this task Nate! I love their quiet vs no-shut-up dynamics.
