Informarion below from [link]

"Washington, Missouri is a town that remembers and reveres its railroad history.

On August 7, 1852, the town trustees ruled in favor of donating a right of way to the Pacific Railroad Company for the expansion of rail service into town. Front Street was later widened to accommodate the new train service, and on a raw winter day in February 1855, the first train arrived in Washington. A young Samuel Clemens, later known as Mark Twain, reported on this event for the Muscatine, Iowa Tri-Weekly Journal. Almost 300 people rode the first train into town, including judges of the county court and many local dignitaries.

The original Washington depot was destroyed during the Civil War by Confederate General Sterling Price’s raid though the area in 1864. The frame depot pictured above was completed in 1865.

When the town outgrew this small depot on the Missouri-Pacific Railroad in about 1924, a new depot was built on the same location. The old depot was placed on logs and rolled 50 feet to the west to be used as a freight depot. It still stands and is believed to be the oldest wooden frame depot in existence west of the Mississippi River.

In the 1950s, both Presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower visited Washington during campaign “whistle stops.” The depot built in 1924 is still used today for passenger travel by Amtrack."
