When Dan decided he couldn't handle a life hurting innocent people who didn't deserve it he turned away from his family of outlaws and decided to dedicate his life to regulating law instead of breaking it. It was not an easy transition. Dan's father figure, Roach, disowned him and his gang brothers feel like he deserted them. Dan lost the only family he'd ever known and had to find his own way without guidance or friends.

This is the night Dan was appointed sheriff of a newly budding frontier town, Redcliff. He is supposed to ride out there the next day and help build the town but he's torn. Dan isn't sure someone like him deserves a badge. He's unsure he can chase down and punish the likes of people he used to run with. What he's most afraid of is if he comes face to face with his old family, his brothers. Will he be able to uphold his lawful oath or will the bonds of his family have him breaking the rules he has decided to enforce?

Dan has never worn his badge openly as a result. He keeps it hidden under his vest. (hence this section of Skytown short stories being titled 'Hidden Stars')

Dan has had many sleepless nights debating his actions. He's now been Redcliff's sheriff over 20 years but he still feels the conflict tug at his conscience late at night now and again.
