Description
City of Alfdreim and the "new town", the Zuidenburt (circa 2330 a.a.H)

Martin the Conqueror, King of Sargos, had extended the reach of his realm by the might of the sword: but rather than dying on the battlefield -as everybody expected him to do-, the old warrior grow older... and as he couldn't ride anymore with his armies, the influence of Sargos achieved by the might of the sword began to vanish in the neighbouring kingdoms and Polforia. He centralised the power around his figure, and achieved a power unseen by previous Sargonic kings... yet, as he began to falter, all the administration depending on him, was lost the grasp of the provinces...

And at his dead, his successors failed to keep together what he had built.

The Kingdom of Degoland slipped away from the hands of the Sargonic crown, being re instituted the  Degolandic monarchy.

As Degoland regained their independence, Alfdreim, one of the bases of the River Guard, saw the marching of the Baronial Army of Hanat. The Baron demanded the River Guard to leave the city, as it was no longer part of Sargos.

During the reign of Martin the Conqueror, they wouldn't have complied. But the successors of Martin hadn't paid the stipendium of the River Guard. So as the city raised a ransom to buy the River Guard to leave, they finally did.

First the Baron was received as liberator, but the Baron of Hanat wanted the city of Alfdreim for himself, and abolish the charter that Martin the Conqueror had granted the city.

But while they had opposing interests, the treat of a Sargonic invasion as retaliation was more pressing, so the Baron marched to secure other castles and cities -for now-, while Alfdreim prepared did extensive to reinforce the defensive capabilities of the city.

Alfdreim had grow beyond the walls, across the Ide river that had contained it for so long. A new palisade and a pit was built to protect the new city, while on the top of the walls and the towers of the curtain wall were built hoardings... to fight a battle that didn't came to be.

The Kings of Sargos tried to retake Degoland. But their army attempted to reach the capital of Degoland, Derei, in the far north of the realm. The new Sargonic-Degoland war wasn't fought in the south, and was a short-lived one: more an attemp by the new sargonic monarchs to save face, than an attempt to keep Degoland under their crown, and after some failed sieges and inconclusive battles, it was signed a peace treaty, that recognised the independence of Degoland in exchange of some of the feudal possessions of the Sargonic king and the payment of retributions (to try to fill a bit the endless hunger of the royal coffers).

Alfreim only had some of their ships taken by the River Guard, and once the fluvial fleet of Sargos burnt some ships right at Ide's rivermouth, and that was the Independence war of Degoland for them.

But now, they had to deal with the Baron of Hanat, if they wanted to retain their municipal charter...

The City of Alfdreim

With the River Guard gone, while the Baron claimed for himself the Vorstkasteel (The King's Keep), as the city only nominally granted it to him, the upper courtyard came to be used by the Town-council, which open up the space for housing due to the cramping conditions of the Elferie in the Old Aelfdreim. The King's Keep quarter will see not only new houses of the grey elves be built -often of the richer grey elves who could affort the price asked by the town council-, but as well the Academy of Arts and Magic of Aelfsdreim. Formed by some scholars of Dol-Sorne and wizards of the city of the Wizards of the Coast of Dahl'Haran: this will be the later base for the library of Aelfsdreim, and the later Aelfdreim University of Aiea.

With the money obtained from selling the grounds of the Vorstkasteel, the Town-Council built a new town hall on the Mensendreim. As the city growth, new churches were built on Mensendreim. The main church, Saint Marya Kerk was extended, but was short-lived, as 40 years later was burnt in an accident -blamed on the elves, as often happened to accidents and diseases on the city-.

The quarters south of the Ide river, called the Zuidenburt, were mostly inhabited by artisans, labourers and fishers. With the River Guard gone -first celebrated as gaining their independence-, it meant they didn't protected anymore Hanat from the barbarians of the Barlans. In a deep raid of the Arraseos Kanov, that marched right across Erenian into Hanat, and into Degoland up to the Ypper, the Zuidenburt was burnt almost completely. However, while Zuidenburt was lost, the Kanov lacked equipment to siege the city itself, and after ravaging the countryside, they continued their march to the north. After that, would begin the construction of the new walls of Alfdreim, that encompassed the Zuidenburt.

Dwarves, despite the River Guard being gone, still couldn't settle within the city due the Municipal charter... but they began building more permanent merchant stalls on the Zwergbruge, the "Dwarfbridge", and some lived in boat-houses near their stalls.

After the Arraseos raid, as the Zuidenburt was rebuilt, they will begin building houses directly on the bridge itself.

I absolutely love all these progression pictures. It's so satisfying seeing a place develop - it's the same feeling as playing a city-builder game.

That's a lot of interesting development, but why did they develop the housing east of the river and not build northwards between the rivers?

i think that both the church in the lower town and the main road change positions in the pictures of now and end of development ..

probably somebody wanted to move that road closer to the new castle in the east of town, so that charging taxes on transit good would be easier

really love this towns development ..

i wonder if the river Ide will be put into the new bed intentionally, or if it will start to run in the dry moat during a flood ..

Many thanks!

A bit of both. In a flood was partially filled with water, so later they decided to dig it deeper once it was dry, to use it as a moat!
