Which cultures practiced cremation? Will that be an impediment to some of our favorites being cloned?

Blue outfit's pose is actually incredible. And for some reason, her hair seems much nicer than the other two. Which is weird, because I'm normally a fan of long hair.
Still, amazing pic, keep up the great work ^_^

Also, it is worth noting that as Alice claimed to be decended from a legendary mercenary of Negeemiliel(Shazeer'ah) she might have been very motivated to locate any lore on the city, and similarly to find any and all the legendary figures of the city she could and make 100% pure copies of them. This would probably also include May(The Legendary Fake Priestess), General Dahl'arak, The Drow Trio, and many others. Also, she would have been VERY interested in claiming EVERY drow archaeological site and any drow remains she could get her hands on in order to better rebuild the race as a whole. And her descendants would have been just as obsessive. Their ultimate prize however would be the remains of Shazeer'ah. And if they managed to perfectly clone any of the famous personages, the would also try to restore their genetically stored memories, quite possibly holding them in suspended animation until such time that it was possible. And as obsessively as they guard their tech, UTI wouldn't even acknowledge the existence of such things, keeping them so secret that other than the scientists working on the projects, who themselves would never be allowed to speak to anyone else and possibly executed once the project was complete(it would depend on the reliability of the scientists on a case by case basis), and the CEO and owner herself. No one else would be allowed to know about this project until UTI was ready to bring the living history of the drow race, and proof of it's supremacy, to the public attention.

While interesting and understandable, I don't share much the idea of DNA genetic memories: is a concept I have heard in computer games and sci-fi, but somehow... doesn't seem too pausible for me?

Elsasgirlfriend In reply to Shabazik [2014-03-04 23:02:26 +0000 UTC]
Well, at best it is only a hypothesis based on the fact that we have only managed to tap into a very small fraction of the information stored in DNA. The very scant literature I have found on it is very thin on facts and a lot of speculation. And until they can give us more, it remains an unproven hypothesis that can't be disproved either.

Shabazik In reply to Elsasgirlfriend [2014-03-04 23:10:15 +0000 UTC]
What I think it would disprove it, partially at least, is that from a sample, it would depend from which moment the sample was taken, what memory could be found.
For example let's say, a person lost his arm. And years later his arm is used to clone him and let's hipotize, with the "genetic memory": wouldn't with luck have the memory, only to the point of the loss of the arm?
In the same way, the premise of the game "assassins creed": Wouldn't the "genetic memory" line be interrupted, each time is given birth to the ancestor?
I mean, the memory of the grandfather would be accesible only until the moment of the conception of the father, and so on!
Only because of these thoughts, I doubt the genetic memory myself, as at least, a memory like the one that make an individual be that individual.

Elsasgirlfriend In reply to Shabazik [2014-03-04 23:18:20 +0000 UTC]
You are quite correct in that the memories would be limited to those available at the time the genetics are passed on or the sample is taken. Still, within those limits, it very well MIGHT be possible to recover any memories that may have been stored in one's DNA.
As far as a hereditary line of memories goes, I think there would be some degradation based on how many generations have passed, but it might be possible to store at least several generations of memories, however they would still be limited by the available memories at the time the DNA is passed on. Only the immediate set of memories of the individual from whom the sample was taken would still be completely intact. That is if they are stored at all.
Again, this is just speculation at this point as we don't have the tech currently to fully decode DNA nor all the information stored within.

For what it is worth, the sacrificial victims of the Temple of Doom are mummified and stored away in a crypt somewhere as property of Negeé. Perhaps the greater Negeemi drow might get similar treatment?
I'm not sure that it would really have been necessary to make huge secret of cloning these personages of the past. I mean, by the future era Aiers and the Nebulosa of Ots setting, cloning is legal and massively practiced, particularly in colonizing new worlds. I would say that Alice and company would not only NOT keep this a secret, they might trumpet it out to the world. Most folks would shrug their shoulders, but drow, and those people who identify themselves as being drow descendants would be very interested.
It might make for a good marketing ploy in getting the support of drow populations and getting those drow to sign up for colonizing the planet Negeé? Indeed, other corporations might dismiss the whole thing as marketing nonsense and be surprised if UTI actually did as it said?
In any case, any drow colonists would probably have the colonizing scheme marketed to them on racial and almost religious zeal, the name of the new planet makes that clear. They would need a great deal of motivation in a way, as they would be ceding most of their rights to UTI? But rebuilding a glorious past amidst the stars in the future would make for an impressive draw. Particularly when the genetic duplicates of the drow of an illustrious past might live and breathe again with the colonists someday would be very exciting!
And, of course, elves having their long lives, the pure elves anyway, the phrase of "A future you might live to see", might be especially true?
I would question if any true memories could ever be restored to clones as any genetic recording of memories is probably not true. Although history might give a sketchy background personality that might be implanted into the clones, much like any produced clone, but a bit more customized. It would hardly be the real deal, but at least the clone would act something like the original might?
Perhaps magic might bridge the gap to restore a true copy of the personality? But as magic in Aiers is more of a matter of energy manipulation, that too may be improbable?
Also, in the end, historians would love to hear of true memories of the past, but would a control minded UTI *really* want personalities from the past to deal with? Genetic copies that are programed to be vaguely reminiscent, but also programed to serve, might be the desired outcome?

The real reason for keeping it so super secret is in case something goes wrong, or they learn something that conflicts with the official party line. Once they were sure that a clone revealed proof of Drow superiority they would release it and the info on it for public consumption. The wouldn't want anything getting out that would contradict the "truth" of Drow superiority.
As for genetic memories, we still aren't sure about it. There is so much raw data in a single strand of DNA that we have only begun to decipher a tiny fraction of a percent of what is stored in it. Mostly just the basic building blocks, but we are unsure of what the rest of it is. The hypothesis that a person's life experiences are not only recorded in chemicals in the brain but also in the chemical make up of DNA has been around for a while, but we still can't either prove or disprove that hypothesis.
