Description I went walking once
Through a forest of birch trees.
And upon my brow
I wore the sun,
And upon my lips
I spoke the world.
Through my eyes
I saw the stars,
Yet with my ears
I could hear nothing.

I came to a birch tree
Less beautiful
Yet more solemn
Than the rest
And I called her Nadia,
And took her as my wife.

Through that forest I wandered
And in my footsteps she followed
Until one day I left the forest for the plains

Nadia went to halt my exodus,
And cried with tears of sap
And begged me to stay,
But my eyes were on the stars
And my ears did not hear
And so I left my dear wife behind.

While I walked through the plains
I thought
And pondered
And wondered
Such that for a year
I did not realize that Nadia had not followed me.

But when I did,
Then upon me came such a winter storm
And stripped from my brow the sun
And stole from my lips the world
And blinded me so that I might never see the stars
But it gave my ears hearing
And my ears could hear
The beautiful laments
Of my birch wife
Whom I would never know again.
