I reminds me of the movie (and the book) "The Last Unicorn," when the witch puts the spell on the unicorn so that normal humans can see a horn that flickers beneath her real one, and it too is sort of sickle-shaped. This unicorn has a lion-like mane, though, and that makes it transcend the horse-with-a-horn idea, since you can see there's more to it than that! Well done!

Was it Black Unicorn by Tanith Lee? I haven't read it yet but I got a copy from Humble Bundle fairly recently. There's another one called Red Unicorn that you can find on Amazon. If this isn't the one, I'm sorry to get your hopes up.
