Let's see here... a version of Beauty and the Beast where the Beauty of the story dies? Possible, another version could just be some creature that is lonely and accidentally kills the first person he comes across in such a long time (that doesn't run away from him) by touching her (Death's touch).

is this a biological organism? bcos those veins/things kind of look like wires, and that would make sense thematically if it was some kind of technology that couldn't feel touch

Woah, this reminds me of Of Mice And Men.
If you haven't read that book, there's a character named Lennie who's really sweet and sensitive but he doesn't know his own strengh, and in the end (SPOILER ALERT) he ends up killing a woman (I'm not gonna say who

I know this reply is 3 months after you posted your comment but I have to say that's a great analysis of this painting. I love Of Mice and Men and agree that this reminds me of it. It kind of reminds me of The Phantom of the Opera too.
