Vermeil was about thirteen when her mother began sending her out on errands to town. One night she had to get medicine, but to get back she had to walk the forest at night...

Vermeil Vesperia. Gotta love her. Little miss badasses are amazing, you know?
This one is dedicated to for her birthday~ (If its too dark, let me know what you want and I'll paint you something new)

Image and background information; Title is a reference to "Higurashi no naku koro ni" (Where the cicadas cry), a very, very dark series with elements of both slasher and psychological horror. I chose to reference Higurashi because of the dark and bloody nature of many versions of the 'little red riding hood' folktale.
WARNING: MILD FOLKTALE LESSON
Most of you are familiar, I'd imagine, with this end; the huntsman guts the wolf and rescues the girl and grandmother from his bowels (they are swallowed whole).
Well, most aren't like that.
In some, the grandmother or the girl kills the wolf. In some the grandmother is killed before she is eaten.
And before the Brothers Grimm got hold of it, the wolf told red to take off her clothes before climbing into bed with him.
Also, sometimes the girl isn't rescued, resulting in her being ripped apart, eaten alive, etc. and in one case she is tricked into eating her grandmother, drinking her blood, and using her intestines to open a door (This is an Italian version, with an ogre in place of the wolf.)
The story is very dark over all, and would scarcely be considered child appropriate in modern times. The point of the folktale was to strike fear into children - listen to your mother, don't stray from the path, by weary of strange men.
Its not meant to be happy and bright. Its meant to teach a lesson.
... folktales are brutal.
In addition, there’s a debate on whether the original folktales 'eating' actually refers to rape.
Like I said, folktales are brutal.
MILD LESSON OVER

This image was not intended to be that dark, but I was trying for creepy. I did research around the swamp I live in, then Google (Sadly the mushrooms were scrapped) for the forest.

Oh... yay... Those are versions which I have never heard of before... cheerful....
It's a nice piece of work =] I couldn't really have said it was creepy, more... serene. But at the same time it DOES have a slight creepy effect to it. Yet like I said, it's also kinda serene.
It's really nice =3

Aren't they though? I just know you needed your childhood so brutally murdered.
Thanks, yeah... gotta work on that, but it makes me happy it made you feel anything. Pictures need to make people feel, or any beauty is empty. Serene is good. Forests should be serene. If you had said it felt brutal and chaotic I probably would have cired, though...
Thanks again~

Lol yes thank you... Lol. Huh so... were all the original folktales so brutal...? Like... my friend told me that in Cinderella the two ugly sisters actually had their heads chopped off my the prince :S
Yeah I agree =] Otherwise it's so empty and it's almost like staring at a blank page. Well... actually staring at a blank page makes you feel depressed that you can't do anything on it... Lol But yeah =]
You're welcome =3 No probs at all XD

Yes. The brutality was considered to make a point, I presume, and they weren't so sensitive back then. You could get excuted for many stupid things anyways, and death was far more mundane and a part of daily life, as opposed to our 80 year life expectancies and downplaying of criminal violence. Theives and highwaymen (muggers/carjackers) tend to only invade areas known for poverty in modern europe and america.
And in some versions they were excuted. They also cut parts of their toes/feet off the fit in the slippers. (think thats bad? In the original Snow white the prince is already married, and upon finding Snow white in a coma in the woods, he proceeds to rape her.)
If you'd like to read some fairy tales closer to their original accounts(the detail is minimalistic, unlike my descriptions tend to be), I can give you a reliable site with an impressive archive of tales, complete with annotations.
Thats a good way to put it. And it does.
Yay.

Huh... oh... yay... Hm yup I guess :S
Ah yeah I think I've heard that one. I think one of them cut off their toes, and one cut off their heel. And both times the prince was so stupid he actually took them back, but on the way birds told him to look at their feet which were bleeding. Seriously stupid.
... Oh... yay... rape... Guess people all realized that these were pretty inappropriate to be telling kids as bedtime stories.. lol.
Oh and yes please! Cruel and depressing actually works pretty well for me sometimes XD Lol. Thanks XD
XDD

Late reply is late
Yep. ("Oh, what is the red dripping from your feet?" "Oh, ehem, it is.... it is the feelings fo my love! Yes! they are so strong that I am ozzing affection for your from my pores!") or something equally weird and sick.
Yeah. It was to discourage them from talking to strange men who seemed kind. (gentle-wolves, which, I believe, Perrault mentions in his end notes)

[link] Yes, its all very fasinating. Fairytails were the first romance stories, as well, showcasing the Heroine's journey (Why they teach the hero's in english but not the heriones, I am not sure.)
