Description Graphite on rives paper, 9x13in

Do yourselves a favor. Never ever ever ever ever EVAR do graphite drawings on rives paper. That shit flakes like dandruff off a dirty wino. *hugs her Bienfang drawing pad*

This is one of my attempts to work on a smaller scale. I'm used to working big, which is better for me in terms of rendering details, but it takes forever to finish a drawing. I figure if I'm ever to work professionally, I'm gonna have to start streamlining my drawing process. Besides, small drawings are easier to haul around, and I can work on them anywhere.

EDITED 1/5/05: Just replaced the digital camera image with a high quality scan, and removed the watermarks in the corner.

If you really did this with the graphite mines by hand then I've got to say that its one of the best things I've seen ever. I love the style and the textures you rendered here! It reminds me somehow of the European Cartoon Style, something like MoebiΓΌs of Bilal.

Pretty cool dude!

OMG you are incredibly talented!! First I love that this reminds me of Mucha. It's very art deco but not. Love the intricate detail. Especially love the eyes and lips. Wow...

Mucha! Yes! *dies* Mucha was one of my earliest influences. Big time. That's probably why I'm always driven like a heroin addict to add circles and curlicues to all my drawings.

Mucha does dreamy art. Driven like a heroin addict huh? It's so refreshing to find humor here on DA
How long does it take you to draw? And where is the rest of your fabulous art? Why you hidin' it from the world? WHY?!!!!!

More art. Please.

How long does it take you to draw?

Well, it depends on the drawing, my level of procrastination, and how lazy I am. For the big color ones (around 30x40 inches), it can take anywhere from a few weeks to six months. And note that I work off and on, so it's not like, six months of continuous work. I find that if I leave the drawings alone for a while, I come back to them with a clearer vision of what to do next and what to fix. For the smaller ones, well, I've never really timed those before, since I do so few of them. I'm a really slow worker; I tiptoe around my drawings too much because I'm afraid of screwing up on them. The minute something goes wrong I sink into a cold, gloomy spiral of shame and despair, throwing my beret, my scarf and my pallette to the floor in anguish, and lamenting in a snooty French accent about the inherent angst and wretchedness of being an Artist. Then I go eat candy and start working again.

And don't worry, I'll upload some more work eventually. Don't hurt meeeee! I need to shoot some hiqh quality digital shots of my work. That would involve a lot of setup (I haven't even tested my new photoflood lights yet), and right now I just don't have the time. But today I'm gonna look into setting up my print account. I'll only offer "After Leonardo" as a print for now, since it's the only print-quality image I have -- it was small enough to be scanned, and the resolution is so high I could make a poster the size of the freakin' Chrysler Building with it. So yeah, more stuff's a'comin'!

YAY!! more stuff!! *happy more stuff dance* I suppose now would be a good time to call off the thugs in cheap ass sweaters with the billy clubs huh?... Gee.. I hope they remember check their messages.

*sigh* I feel your pain. I work in massive sizes as well, but then again, Im fully digital, and dont need to lug anything about, so I SUPPOSE the wait I am forced to endure for my eye candy is sorta understandable.

Sorta.

LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

I wish that I kept up my drawing. I haven't drawn in years and used to a lot when I was younger and in college. Writing has replaced that and now, digital art has almost replaced my writing. I can't wait to see what you submit next.

I'm working on some small sketches that, suprisingly, I'm pretty happy with. They're small enough to scan, so no screwing around with a camera and lights! Only . . . I don't have a scanner.

Sigh. Time to go shopping again.

You must be the only artist without a scanner! That's hilarious! I can't wait to see these sketches...

Well, I'm buying all my equipment piecemeal, since everything's so expensive and I want to take the time to learn how to use everything thoroughly before moving on to the next item. It's just easier on me that way. The scanner was at the bottom of the list because I didn't have any immediate need for it.

Hmm verrrry interesting. I can't even see your "invisible" watermarks when I highlight the piece. As I've said before, I love the quality of your gradation and your style is evident. Its like a beautiful mesh of sci-fi-macabre and the sections shout at you as though the hand part is saying "This is real" and the face is screaming "This is not!"

As a side note, I might start adding watermarks to my own pieces, if I can find the time.

Fantastic. You say that you are going to work professionally, but as it looks to me, you *ARE* a professional. I just have one question about it this piece. Did you use some sort of model or look off something else, or did you just come up with that off the top of your head? Either way, it is still spectactular.

"Did you use some sort of model or look off something else, or did you just come up with that off the top of your head?"

Mostly out of my head. But I was inspired by David Mack's "Kabuki" series (Google for him. He's AWESOME). I've had a mask fetish ever since.

Thanks! Yeah, that kind of paper is perfect for color pencil, but graphite just doesn't seem to stick well. I had to redo the blacks several times before I could spray it with fixative.
