Description This elegant creature is a leafy sea dragon (Phycodurus eques), on display at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Longbeach, CA. These rare animals make their homes in the inshore waters of the southern part of Western Australia and South Australia. Their leafy appendages allow them to hide in the seagrass that grows in their habitat, but do not aid in the animal's locomotion. Highly prized by collectors, the leafy sea dragon has all but disappeared in its native waters, which are threatened by pollution and fertilizer runoff.

Because of their fragility and exacting dietary requirements, these relatives of the seahorse have proven to be extremely difficult to breed in captivity. Only three aquariums worldwide have been able to breed dragons successfully.

Like seahorses, sea dragon males are the ones who get pregnant and give birth.

They have no known predators in the wild.

I love sea dragons, and this is a gorgeous capture. We've seen them washed up on the seashore before. My partner and I live in Perth, Western Australia and regularly travel to the South West and North. They're gorgeous.

beautiful picture...I know myself how hard it is to take underwater shots, although the Aquarium probably has better lighting than my home fish tank

and it also depends on the camera you've got I've got to, one is small, not that great, I tried once to make some pictures, all moved, none really went right, and I've got anohter one (well, actually it's my dad but I use it anyway )
and I made in another aquarium, and it was almost hard to make them fail, if you get what I mean

Well my regular camera is typically pretty good for stuff you can get that close to - just not aquariums :/
