Description The Paint-Your -Own Oriental dragon, test painted. I always need to paint a few to find all the stuff I still need to fix. He is airbrushed with acrylic paint, has glass eyes and pewter horns (these golden ones are borrowed from a different dragon for the photo).
He is completely finished now! He is available, unpainted  from our online store: (if these dragons are sold out, sign up for the notification email to notify you when they are back in stock, or just check back in a day or two) windstonestore.com/product-cat…
He is about 9 inches long.
I've posted several in-process pics of this dragon , here is one of the first: The scales were individually hand carved.

Oooh, I really want to try my hand at this! I just got the ruby original one from a museum sale (along with baby and some others!).

I've been waiting almost a decade for these Melody, will it be a while before they are released, or soon?
This sculpture is lovely and I'm so happy you've made an oriental dragon in the Paint-Your-Own line!

A decade?? Has it been that long?
We now have the molds for the pewter horns, and have cast some, the sculpture finished and  is having its final molds made... we should be pretty close to having them for sale! I  never know for  sure how much longer it will be- making  a batch of production molds does take a few weeks. Then they need to be cast, and dried.
 Maybe next month?
I cant wait to see how people paint these.

Yeah, about a decade ago in the old forum I asked for a PYO oriental
I'm really excited for this one since it's been so long hoped for. It looks exquisite!
Will there be any places to put gemstones like the other sculptures?

He can hold something the size of a marble in his mouth and he has a hole in his upraised paw to hold something. I suggested a Barbie purse, but a jewel would fit there. He doesn't have empty holes designed to stick pointed-backed gems, but you could put those flat-backed ones anywhere.

That's so exciting! I have a selection of small semi-precious gemstones saved for PYOs, and they are definitely not flat-backed.
(now I'm also excited for the chickens you've been making too!)

Very, nicely, elegant little fellow, Melody. Do you recommend buyers only use acrylics on these PYO figures?

Reptangle In reply to keight [2016-03-22 02:33:22 +0000 UTC]

That's what we know works, but people also have experimented with powdered pigments  and all sorts of things. We don't recommend oil or laquer paint , but I haven't experimented with it very much.

I apologize if this sounds stupid, but what about fingernail polish? My sister just moved and now I have a giant box of half used nail polishes. Is that too close to a laquer?

Reptangle In reply to SmallAustrianVillage [2016-03-22 16:52:26 +0000 UTC]

Good question. I have used fingernail polish on spots, and it seems to work just  fine. The only thing I would worry about is sealing the entire figure with a thick coating of lacquer based paint so that It can't breathe. Moisture might possibly build up under the paint, creating blisters. I haven't seen this happen, but we  haven't experimented very much with lacquer and oil based paint.

Alright. I'll give it a shot then with spots for it to 'breath'. Thank you!

OK. Courtesy of the home remodel, I've acrylic house paint, tube and liquid acrylics for canvas, acrylic, aka, water-based miniature figure paint, and, if it hasn't been tossed, yet acrylic textile paint, on hand. Any of those not a good idea? Obviously the tube paint and house paint would have to be thinned so that sculpture details won't be lost.

Reptangle In reply to keight [2016-03-22 16:56:43 +0000 UTC]

They will all work.  The tube acrylic paint needs to be thinned or it will go on blotchy and uneven. It is not the best choice for this use, unless "painterly" is the look you want.  The best stuff to use is fluid acrylics. Fabric acrylic works fine.

Here is a tutorial from the Windstone website about painting these. It was written by when the PYO pieces had the eyes glued in already. Now we ship them with the eyes separate, so ignore the part about masking the eyes.

Reptangle In reply to SmallAustrianVillage [2016-03-22 00:28:27 +0000 UTC]

I made his mouth open enough to fit a regular  ( about 14 mm) marble, so we could certainly include one.

prezaurian In reply to Reptangle [2016-03-23 20:20:25 +0000 UTC]

Yay!  I had thought it would only fit 10mm.  Knowing that it'll fit a regular size marble is wonderful.  So many possibilities there!

Reptangle In reply to prezaurian [2016-03-24 04:18:31 +0000 UTC]

It did but I changed it. Now his pie-hole fits one of the size marbles we use.

prezaurian In reply to Reptangle [2016-03-24 15:38:42 +0000 UTC]

Welp, that just means he can fit more pie in.  Or other things...like marbles with things inside them.  And by things, I mean bugs.  Marbles with bugs in 'em (the ones in the link are too big, but perhaps I can find smaller).    I was hoping to find acrylic marbles with miniatures of pies in them....  But no such luck...yet.
