Description My entry for the 's contest.

The Qilin/Kirin (Chinese: 麒麟) is a mythical Chinese chimerical creature known throughout various East Asian cultures.
The word 'Qilin' is derived from the Somali word 'Geri' which means Giraffe.
There are many different ways Qilin have been described:
Some think of them as a rare form of unicorn; others have described it as a creature that has the head of a dragon and a body of tiger with scales. Others see it as a creature with a single horn on its forehead, a multicolored back, the hooves of a horse, the body of a deer, and with the tail of an ox.
It is sometimes called the "Chinese/Japanese unicorn".
To see one alive is a good omen - to see a dead kirin is bad.

So this is my Kirin, it is jumping out a "painting" which illustrate a Japanese forest.
I hope you like it!

First of all, good job on the lively colors, the perspective in the painting and most of all, the concept! great idea.
I like how you have put vines and flowers on the horns and tail, it ties the creature into the painting environment that he came from, helping the viewer understand better where he came from and what is going on. Also good use of symbol to put the japanese style gate trellis thing in there to make sure we know the origin of this mythical creature. Also its a good touch that you added the shadow. Now for some constructive: The energy is good but can enhance the energy of similar drawings in the future by trying to eliminate straight lines. The creature might be mythical but if its a mixture of tiger, deer, horse, any of those things have knees in the front, so there is a slight curve or bend or maybe just a knob where the knee bone is. The curve of the back legs is much more natural and appealing than the front. (If the creature is supposed to look 2d, then disregard the next part) more energy and interest could be added by changing the angle to at least a 3/4 angle of him jumping out so we don't see a side profile but a portion of the front of the face and chest etc. using some foreshortening would also help. The scales are cool and I like that you put them under the eye also and down the spine, the furry chest and then repeat of fur on the back legs is also good for tying all these different qualities together. I thought the 'painting' was a TV at first honestly, because of the black thick frame. either idea would be ok but it makes more sense out of a painting. you could show that its a painting more easily changing the frame so it looks more like a classic picture frame, or in a cartoon way you could put a string and show that its hung up by that string. Overall its bright and imaginative the colors pop, it look clean and finished and the style is consistent. good job. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>
