I have readed all your words (I translated them). Even if I'm not a graphitic ... but a simple Artis! It's humanism that drives me to take the time to read translate; Understand traduce and reply to you .... I hope you put yourself upright .... and you pull a good lesson from your pain ...... because life consists of two thing pain and Pleasure .... pleasure is a motive ..... pain is a hard lesson .... it is necessary to struggle to find time to detach itself from everything .... and works to have real wealth .. ..which means to be free .(don't pray for an easy life ...but pray for the strength to endure a hard one )Bruce Lee....take care of you

Breaks are always mentioned to be needed when working with computers, but it's so easy to forget to make one. I know it from myself
My eye-doctor compared the eye muscles to leg muscles to give an example to me about what is going on in the eye when looking for long at something at short distance (like computer monitor).
He said that looking at the monitor is for the eyes like for the legs is being in a squat position.
Looking 8 hours a day at a monitor without a break is like being in squat 8 hours a day without a break.
You can probably imagine how your leg muscles would be stiff and how they'll hurt when you'll try to stand up after 8 hours in squat if you won't be giving them breaks
The eye muscles are becomming stiff in the same way, and after 8 hours a day without break they have problem to reach their other positions (like changing focus into something in a distance), just like the legs will do. Eventually they'll reach it but with a lot of pain.
The difference is that the eye muscle is much smaller and so it doesn't pain as the larger muscles does. That's why a care for our eye muscles is so underestimated and why we often forget that we should do something for them. They simply don't hurt us until it's quite serious.
I did learn some exercises for the eyes at our university PE.
When you already take a break, the best brake is to look outside of window. There are many distant objects, so your eye muscles can stretch properly. Look at the house across the street, or a forest or mountains in distance, whatever. Look in the distance for several minutes. So the eyes can stretch.
Another exercise for the eyes is changing focus distance. You look out from the window on the house over the street for several seconds, then you look on your car in front of your house (again for several seconds), then you look on your bed/table/wardrobe, etc. And repeat for a minute or two. The point is that you're looking at objects that have different distances. This trains the eye to be flexible.
And a third I can remember, is to give the eyes a rest in dark black. Rub your hands to warm them up, so they'll feel comfortable for your eyes. Then cover your eyes with your palms. But don't press on the eyes, the eyes should be relaxed. Just use the palms to block the light comming to your eyes, so all you can see is dark black. Try to open your eyes under your palms to check if there isn't a gap by which a light is comming and try to close any gap. Relax your eyes for a while in this darkness.
I wish you to get better with your eyes soon
And keep taking proper breaks

Oh my god...
I've been going to the opticians and the hospital due to the horrible pain in my eyes
my eyes, eyebrows and behind my eyes have been in agony that no amount of painkillers took away the pain
they tried giving my glasses to wear while I work and then haven't helped me since
but, I'm the worst person for giving myself breaks!!
I'll not eat or drink through day because I'm that in the zone that everything just passes me by
and then it's like 1 in a morning and I'm shocked, no food, drink or break in general
I really need to pull my socks up and do something about it
I just panic I'm not going to get all my work done in time if I have all these breaks, but my health comes first!
I'm really sorry about your health and hope you get better or at least feel comfortable with no pain, best of luck!!

Oh my god, I already have a diagnosed neurological condition but I was hospitalized about a year ago (same thing, double visions, eye pain, I also lost a lot of motor control) The doctors were pretty sure I had multiple sclerosis too but ruled it out and could never figure out what was wrong. These symptoms still come up, sometimes I cant look at anything without getting ill and I have to wear sunglasses inside just to ease things a little bit to function. I work on digital art up to 13-14 hours a day usually 5 days a week (usually not even breaking to eat away from my computer, I realize this is a problem)...I'm thinking i should probably bring this up with my doctor now.
Thank you for posting this I've never even heard of it.
I really hope things get better for you, I know how scary neurological diseases can be.
I'm going to do my best to take breaks Dx

If the pain is around eyebrows and inside the eyeball, plus if you feel in dark room like you were looking at the middle of the sun and you work for 13-14h/day - that is quite possible you do too have acomodation spasm. For motor control, I don;t know. It may cause the whole face and neck muscle tence, but if it's optical problem, it shouldn't have anything to do with your motor abilities. : /

You only have accomodation spasm, luckily. I've heard about MS. One of my former classmates has it and now he is on wheelchair.
Because I work on computer, I got undercorrected glasses (anyway, i can't fully recover my vision after I reached minus four and after I got astigmatism), and I have a supplementary pair of glasses that are even weaker than those I use everyday. At least this prevent accommodation spasms.

Thank you for sharing this. I work 40+ hours in front of dual monitors as a 3D machine designer. Screens are very hard on the eyes for that many hours. I now have permanent vision problems and have to wear corrective lens full time because of it. Absolutely take lots of break from art or design if you are on a screen or working close to your paper! Thanks for sharing your story, best of luck to you and get well soon.

Thanx for the warning.
I have a Cintiq myself, but I've never worked 12 hours straight on it.
The longest time I've ever spent on it (I believe) was about 5 hours.
But I'll be more more wary of my usage time from now on.
Hope you feel better and heal up soon.
And again, thanx for the heads up.

be careful. I also had overcorrected glasses so it surely made thing worse. But cintiqs demand you to place your eyes very close to the screen.

I wear glasses too......dunno if mine are categorized as being "overcorrected".
One thing I've been doing for a few years now to alleviate eyestrain on a Cintiq,
is to not work in darkness and have multiple lights on whenever it's in use.
Drawing in a well lit room is always good for the eyes I suppose.
Although I had never used my Cintiq in total darkness,
for a while, I still usually kept only minimal additional light around when drawing on it.
I noticed a definite ease of eyestrain and work improvement when I started using additional lights.
For me, I always have some lights positioned off to my right and left.
And keep them on at all times when it's on.
(a light directly behind me and/or in front of the Cintiq causes an annoying glare on it's screen)
I've not gotten to to point of physical pain or where eye spasms occur,
but I'll definitely bring up the subject on my next optometrist visit.
Once again....thanx for the warning.
I hope you heal up and feel better soon.

thats very scary must admit im guilty of not taking breaks and resting my eyes and i tend to get a lot of headaches that turn into migraines because of it, but i do blame myself for not taking break and i am ment to wear glasses when i work with my tablet but i dont because i cant see the difference.
i really need to start wearing them and making sure i have my breaks
i use a wacom cintiq companion 2

Oh no. So sorry to hear what happened to you. Yes breaks are more important that we know. I don't know much about the cintiq you use. Is it one of those where you look at the cintiq while working instead of looking at the computer monitor?
Take all the time you need to get better. Recovery takes time so be careful not to get back full speed when you start up again.

Yikes, take care. You probably already heard this, but better safe then sorry. SOme things I do to help is drawing on neutral coloured canvas, inverting the screen when there is lots of white, and using break time software to schedule stretch breaks.
Best of luck, and hope you get well soon. cheers!
