Description The "introductory falls" at Robert H. Treman state park in Ithaca NY. I've been here three times now and this is the best flow I have seen here. As alway thanks for viewing!

Great composition! The structure of the falls, with its many curves and forms makes it difficult to capture tastefully, but it seems you've had little problem with that!

Are you using any ND filters? They can do wonders to minimize diffraction!

Thank you very much! I'm actually using a sing ray vari-n-duo, I just got it and have used it on all my shots starting with the elakala ones. I'm still learning it but I'm I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Woah! I have never seen anything like that before, certainly a handy tool to have around as opposed to the wallet of filters I carry. Thanks for showing me that, I'll look into those. !

It definitely is! I was the same way, always had too many filters and thought to myself, there has to be a better way! After doing some research I opted to go for it even though I really struggled paying that much for a filter. It seems worth it though. The only thing I don't like it that it vignettes on my 16-85 until 22mm. So for instances where I want to go wide I saved my old polarizer. I may dump it though as I can just crop it out.
Your welcome, definitely look into it. It's currently the only filter in my bag.(besides the oldie which I just have attached to another lens.)

Oh my, that is some pretty harsh vignetting? Is it anything correctable or is it a full on black vignette that's only fixable with cropping? Also, does the D90 have a cropped sensor?

The reason I ask is I use a 12-24mm for my wide shots, so that filter would vignette quite harshly!

Still looks really neat though!

So far I've only encountered it in one shot, it's one I haven't posted yet, but cropping will work in that ones favor anyway. So, so far it hasn't effected me yet. As far as far as how dark the vignetting is it depends on my aperture setting. So in some situations I think it will be correctable. Otherwise I suppose I could do the good old cloning method if I really needed too. I prefer not to go that route though. The D90 does have a cropped sensor. They do make a thin mount which is even pricier but you could call them or e-mail them about how it would effect your lens, they are pretty good with their support.

Thanks for the information. Perhaps the vignetting isn't as bad as I am thinking. I sometimes have to stack my polarizer and ND filter so I get stuff like in this picture up in the top left corner: [link]

So if it doesn't affect pictures in that way, I'm sure it will be fine. I saw the thinner one too, it's only $50 more, which is not bad for a thinly made filter!

That's not bad at all, cropping wouldn't detract from that shot. That would also be easy to clone. At 16mm the vignetting for me is easily twice that though. That's a nice shot by the way!

Oh, yikes! Okay. It can be cropped and such, but the reason I got my 12-24 is to really use that 12mm focal length, so it'd be sad if I never ended up using it!

PaulSwiatkowskiPhoto In reply to Skarxun [2011-06-25 01:25:29 +0000 UTC]

yeah that's why I exchanged the 12-24 tokina I got for the 16-85. With that filter I would never use it. Again though, I don't know how the thin mount would work for you.

Down this way we have been getting tons of rain and in May we set a record for most amount of rainfall in a month. No complaints from me on waterfall standpoint. it's just a matter of getting out to shoot them. Never easy for me lol.
Many thanks Addam, always appreciate your comments!

I hope so too. Later this month I'll be camping at one of two places that have waterfalls with my wife and kids. Hopefully I'll have a decent flow by then.

It really is crazy, but so true. It's there loss though, they'll never know how good of a feeling it is to be the only person there. It's so peaceful.

Than's a beautiful flow, Paul. I guess you could not go further down with your camera, otherwise you could go for a even more exciting composition - meaning further down and panning to the left a bit.

Thanks Alban! Yeah this is a tough one to get good comp. There is no way to access this from creek level, you just have to pick your spot on the stone ledge and go from there. Creek level would be ideal though I think. You could get a nice down low perspective from the bottom fall and lead up with the other two. Maybe next time if there is less water I'll try to find a safe way to access the creek.

One needs a good tripod for that kind of work, and good shoes.
