Thank you and really glad you like the shot and the spider. She is really stunning and I hope I see her again next yr once it warms up. It's been getting cold now so most of the jumpers are now finding places to hibernate for the winter.

Great shot! I can never get good close ups of the ones I see and I haven't seen this type where I live. Love the black and green.

I look forward to it. I find spiders really interesting. It frustrates me that I can't get good close ups of them, but I can't afford to invest in a macro lens at this point. Someday.

I know the feeling. The only thing better is getting a new camera and a new herptile!

Now you're talking. Speaking of picking up small herps, there's a reptile show an hour from me this sunday. I'd have to really book it to get there, back and to work on time, but you just know I'm going to get in trouble if I go. And how could I NOT go?

This one is in Bangor Maine, about an hour from where I live. It's apparently the first they've had here, so I really want to go. Unfortunately I have to work that day so I will be there first thing when they h=open and will have to really high tail it to get home in time for work.

Yes, I'll let you know how it is. And you have to fill me in on the PA one. This will actually be my first reptile show. I can guarantee it won't be the last though!

Back in the days when I was first into herps they didn't have shows. Then I was out of the loop for many years. The hobby has skyrocketed since I last pursued it, I am delighted to say. I look forward to many shows in my future.

I used to take out the Peterson guide. I swear I nearly wore it out from borrowing it.
On other fronts, I nearly had a coronary tonight. I had opened my critter keepers to feed the baby geckos tonight. I guess I hadn't closed one properly because an hour or so later I only saw 2 babies instead of three. I have been frantic all night, tearing the room apart looking for this 2 inch long gecko, praying one of the dogs hadn't found it. Finally just now I walked into the room, hoping it would have come out in the darkened room and I saw it on my bed.
Thank god it was fine. I was sick with worry. The little imp. And it wasn't happy to go back in it's cage after it's big adventure. I swear the other two were looking for it while it was missing too.
Anyway, now I will be able to sleep tonight. And enjoy the reptile show this weekend. I was absolutely sick with worry.
I've never seen an eyelash viper in person, only in pictures. But I have no desire to own any poisonous snakes. Though I confess I have always wanted a gila monster! Not that I would actually get one, but there is just something about them.

I was beside myself until I found him. That's one of the reason I'm not keen on keeping snakes. Aside from the feeding issue, they are much better escape artists than lizards are. When I kept snakes they were always getting out. In this house with 5 dogs and a cat your chances are not good if you make a break. Which is why I was so frantic with the baby gecko. Thank god I found it before the other critters did. As to the poisonous ones, again the escape issue is a major one. So I will pass on keeping anything venomous for the sake of my other animals as well as my own.

My trouble is I like to really see the animal, so tanks are my enclosure of choice. And you're right, the clips don't stop anything that is strong and determined to get out. So That more than anything will probably keep me from getting a snake. I could probably deal with the frozen thawed thing, but I really don't want to deal with the dead chewed snake thing when it gets out and the dogs or cat get to it.

I know some animals never really get acclimated. And for serious breeding it becomes a space issue. I'm now getting to the point where I'm going to need to take furniture out to make space for tanks. So the rack thing makes sense on that level. I just really enjoy watching them so much I hate to go there.

What do you do with stuff that needs UVB? How do you manage that with racks without creating a fire hazard with the lights?

I didn't know that snakes don't need UVB. Thanks for the info. So for that reason racks are a good choice, safety to keep them contained and ease of care. I am doomed to fish tanks and later on probably larger constructed cages when things get too big for what I have. I don't see racks in my future. But that's ok. Part of the thing that makes this hobby so interesting is that there are so many kinds of herps. It's a never ending smorgasbord of reptilian delight. And everyone gets to choose what they like best.

I can see that the no UVB requirement is a huge thing in the plus column though. As well as the beauty of the animals too of course. Your little corn snake is just so pretty.

Yeah, multiple UVBs...ouch. That alone is going to put a damper on me expanding my collection for a while.

I like this species a lot. I get them around here in the Kansas City area, too. I've seen females (probably of a different species from this one, but with similar colors) have a body the size of my thumb. No kidding, and those iridescent mandibles are beyond gorgeous.
