Summary of character’s history: For as long as he could remember, Takatora had been living out his life as a wandering vagrant with his Luxray father. He never knew his mother, but he seldom asked his father about her especially after he caught the flicker of pain in his eyes when he first put forth the question regarding her identity. Constantly moving from place to place, Takatora became well-versed in the various cultures that dotted Kinez and developed an extensive world view which allowed him to think things through in a rational manner. His father taught him all that he knew about fighting, and the training resulted in Takatora developing a style of combat which was both aggressive—due to his father’s influence—and strategy-focused, the latter to compensate for his smaller build. Having power at his disposal, the Pikachu was unsure on how to utilize it. He noted that his father had a slight penchant for helping others, but Takatora did not wish to blindly follow the example set by his guardian. He verbalized his musings to the Luxray who simply gave Takatora a thoughtful look and suggested that he journey to Tambolo City to acquire the answers he craved. Prior to them going their separate ways, Takatora’s father gave him a note directing him to a specific location in Tambolo City and some money to support him. Thanking his father for looking after him, Takatora headed for the largest city in Kinez.

Other: He has a diagonal scar in between his eyes.

Summary of character’s history: He was born in Lenora City to a well-off couple. Since birth, he has displayed an insightful personality and a maturity well beyond his years. He did not get along well with the other kids because of this, leading him to being ostracized and labelled ‘weird’ by them. It was not a cause of great concern to him though since he considered them to not be worth his attention anyway. Years passed, and Sid became more and more frustrated by his surroundings, so much that he chose to run away from home after leaving behind a note for his parents which stated to not look for him. His manipulative personality allowed him to sustain a life on the road. He freely twisted words and meanings in addition to leaving out details to suit his own needs. He did not care if his actions resulted in others getting hurt; he only cared about himself. The Eevee eventually crossed paths with a Luxray who managed to see through his deception and garner Sid’s interest. The Luxray put forth a suggestion to Sid that he go to Tambolo City to seek some worthwhile excitement, a proposal to which Sid agreed after some consideration. Acquiring a note and a satchel from the Luxray, Sid headed for Tambolo City.

Other: N/A

The deities seemed to be feeling rather merciful since Tambolo City was not being pelted with strong winds or destructive strikes of thunder that morning; rather, rays of sunshine illuminated the urban area and enlivened the residents' spirits even more. Scores of them flooded the streets as each sought to make their respective days as meaningful as possible as a way of thanking whichever deity they worship for granting them another day in the world of the living. With the influx of Pokémon from across the sea, one could discern a festive and jovial air about the city.

A Pikachu dispassionately observed the Pokémon from different walks of life go about their daily lives with mild interest through a window of a little pastry shop. His brown eyes flickered over to the half-eaten Rawst shortcake in front of him as he absentmindedly scratched the top of the fluffy cake with the fork provided with it. Setting the silver utensil down, he picked up his cup of coffee and softly blew across its steamy contents before he took a couple of sips. Relishing the flow of the caffeine-enriched substance down his throat as he felt his heartbeat quicken slightly, he placed the cup back down onto its saucer and slipped two fingers into the long emerald scarf wrapped loosely around his neck. Pulling out a small piece of slightly brownish paper, he unfolded it to reveal a short message written in distinct penmanship. He read:

I want you to meet someone. I’ve designated a pastry shop in Tambolo City as the meeting place. Feel free to ask the locals for directions since the pastry shop is the only one of its kind and quite easy to miss. Good luck.

“Is this spot taken?” a somewhat cocky voice inquired.

The voice pierced through the silence pervading the establishment like a lance and prompted the Pikachu to raise his field of vision, just in time to see a black bandana-donning Shiny Eevee settle down on the seat across him. The former surveyed the interior of the shop from the corner of his eye: all of the other tables were unoccupied, and that could only mean one thing.

“You must be the one to which my father was referring,” the Pikachu remarked.

A smirk fleeted across the Shiny Eevee’s visage. “You’re quick on the uptake,” he noted in a satisfactory tone. “Name’s Sid Sigurd.” Sid inclined his head slightly and slipped the satchel he was carrying off his shoulder. “Nice to meet your acquaintance, Takatora Kureshima.”

Takatora reciprocated Sid’s greeting with a nod of his head. He then propped an elbow on the table and queried, “So what is it you wish to discuss with me, Sid?”

Sid blinked at the Pikachu seated across from him and responded quizzically, “I am under the impression that you’re in on your father’s plan for us to form a team and join a guild.”

“That’s up to you,” Takatora respired softly, absentmindedly poking his cake with the fork. “I don’t want you to feel obligated to follow my father’s suggestion. If you want to form a team with me, then I want you to truly want to do it.”

The Pikachu’s words evoked a drawn-out humming sound from the Shiny Eevee. “I too share that opinion, I gotta admit,” Sid informed. “I don’t exactly play well with others and am not that big on the whole team-and-guild thing.”

“So why are you here then?” the scarred Pikachu prodded, stabbing his fork into the cake.

“Two reasons,” Sid drawled, reaching out and pulling the fork out of the cake and by extension, a sizable chunk of the confectionery treat. Popping the chunk into his mouth, he swallowed it before he resumed, “On a whim...and because of my interest in you.”

Narrowing his eyes, Takatora put forth a simple request. “Explain.”

Sid obliged without a second thought. “The first reason is pretty self-explanatory,” he began. “I’m not the kind of individual who plans things in advance—I just do things for the sake of doing them. And as for the second reason...” A chuckle suddenly rumbled in his throat as he turned his head to stare out the window. “Before I get to that, would you mind telling what you see when you look at other Pokémon?”

“Exactly what I see—other Pokémon” was Takatora’s prompt response. He followed Sid’s cue and eyed the Pokémon outside the shop. “I suppose you can say that’s the primary reason I’m even entertaining my father’s suggestion in the first place. Growing up and living my life as a wandering vagrant, I’ve been exposed to the many cultures that exist on this continent and developed an extensive world view as a result. At the same time though, I’ve become…empty…on the inside.”

“Empty?” Sid echoed.

Takatora nodded and elaborated, “Pokémon from different cultural and social backgrounds react to similar situations differently. Henceforth, the extensive exposure I experienced made it difficult for me to form my own set of opinions about things…and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. In addition to that, I found out during one of my musings that I don’t have any form of desire, be it selfish or selfless.”

Sid frowned and opined, “I find that hard to believe. Desires are what define us as Pokémon.”

“Whether you choose to believe it or not is entirely up to you,” Takatora told the Shiny Eevee neutrally. He directed his gaze back towards Sid. “I’m also at a crossroads over what to do with the power I have at my disposal.” The Pikachu snapped his fingers and produced a small spark of electricity between his fingertips. “Use it for the betterment of others…or the betterment of my own self… I plan to find the answers I need while I’m here. In a way, I envy Pokémon like you, one who grew in unchanging surroundings.”

“Envy me?” Sid scoffed. “That’s a laugh. For me, it’s the other way around. Growing up in Lenora City… I’ve never felt so claustrophobic in my life. Up until this point, I never regretted running away. It was like a heavy weight had been lifted off my shoulders when I stepped foot out of that damned city…but we’re getting sidetracked here.” The Shiny Eevee tugged his kerchief slightly before he shifted the focus back to the original topic of the colloquy. “Whereas you see other Pokémon as ‘just’ other Pokémon, I see most of them as nothing more than tools. They are sickeningly easy to manipulate. Just twist a few words, warp a few meanings and you’ll have them eating outta the palm of your paw. Your dad was one of the few who managed to see through my deception, and when he told me that he had son, I can’t help but be interested in meeting him.” He smirked at Takatora. “And I guess there’s some truth to the like-father-like-son idiom.”

The Pikachu seated across the Shiny Eevee huffed softly and pointed out, “You still haven’t revealed what makes me so interesting in your eyes.”

Sid’s mirthful grin stretched even wider if that was even possible. “I consider myself a very insightful Pokémon,” he told Takatora. “I pride myself at being able to discern the personality of other Pokémon at first glance, a skill that makes them that much easier to manipulate. When I look at you though, I get nothing. I don’t know if the one I’m talking to right now is the true you or not. You’re like a clean slate, and that’s what I find most intriguing about you. Hmm, I can see why you consider yourself to be empty on the inside.”

Takatora rolled his eyes and murmured, “I’ll take that as a compliment.” He promptly cleared his throat and crossed his arms across his chest. “In any case, I admit that you’re an interesting character. I care not for your manipulative nature. Rather, I consider it a beneficial asset in aiding the accomplishment of the tasks we accept.”

“You flatter me, Leader,” Sid replied mockingly. “Anyway, I hear that the guilds want us to have a kind of ‘team name’ to work under them with. Have any suggestions?”

Placing some Dokoi on the table, Takatora hopped off his seat and adjusted his scarf. “Yggdrasil,” he answered laconically. “We’ll be joining the Rogues.”

“Ho~” Sid respired in amusement, assuming a new position by Takatora’s side. “Mind telling me the reason?”

“To my knowledge, the Rogue Guild Leader is abrasive, rash and has a tendency to bite off more than he can chew,” the scarred Pikachu remarked offhandedly. “Plus, he’s a Luxio, nothing I can’t handle, what with growing up with a Luxray father and all.” He added, “On the other hand, the Assistant Rogue Guild Leader is disturbingly childish and gullible to a fault.” Takatora gave Sid a sideways glance. “That’s right up your alley, isn’t it?” With that said, he walked out of the shop and headed in the direction of the Rogue Guild Headquarters.

Sid bowed his head and expelled a foreboding chuckle. “I can already feel the excitement coursing through my veins,” he whispered giddily as he took off after Takatora.

If there's one thing I can expect from your writing, it's the unpredictable and underlying dark tones of your characters that you have a tendency to apply to your works. Not saying that as a negative thing though, haha.

Only Sid is the truly evil one though, Takatora is neutral.

25 pages left. Getting back into the groove.

It's not a fic written by you if it doesn't have a truly evil character, haha. And going by your definition of neutral, I'd say it's a rather...questionable one in terms of general ethics.

Well darn, now aren't you a bit overdue. Hopefully the update after this one wouldn't take THAT long, but do note I'm not rushing ya.

Takatora is a Heroic Neutral whereas Sid is a Neutral Evil. Ponder on that...

Well, my character would be returning so it'll most likely be faster. I'm on my semester break anyway.

Well, neutral types play by their own rules because they don't have a particular allegiance. That's also another trait your characters have: they don't have a black and white view on things, though you've mentioned to me that such a way of seeing things is anything but good.

Do note it will be in a few chapters, perhaps 2 and 3. Also, you might be pleased that a certain Latios will gain Chaos as one of his special abilities.

In a way, it's not good since a character would be more willing to perform questionable actions and others won't be so willing to trust them. However, they are much more accepting of the complex nature of the world and thus have a higher survivability rate.

Too bad he has Morality Pets to keep him grounded.

That's usually how the fittest survive. They aren't affected by things that would normally shock them to the core, which would be the case if they had a preset view of how to live life.

With a little training, it can be controlled...but it's not like he asked for said ability considering it was cursed upon him.

Yggdrasil is less dark compared to Unchained Hearts since only Sid contributes to it whereas possibly all the members and/or future members of Unchained Hearts are dark characters.

I think Yggdrasil will add a bit of darkness to Remnants since you know how I portray my characters.

Sid will be doing the 2nd Rouge Side Mission in which his manipulative nature will come into play. I pity whatever Practitioner NPC I come up with. While we're on this subject, will Takatora receive IQ points as well if he doesn't do the Side Mission together with Sid?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Arsenikira In reply to Nox-Nemoris [2014-01-23 01:24:59 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, you and I both like to have dark characters

The IQ scores are separate for each Pokemon, so if Sid only does a Side Mission, then Takatora will not receive the IQ. If Takatora participates in the other side mission or tags along with Sid, then he will get the points. Think of the IQ as street smarts or experience, you have to be there to learn.

Oh well, I guess he can compensate by doing some TBRs.
