Description Huge wild fires ravaged one of most precious natural treasures in Europe, the Biebrza National Park... on symbolic Earth Day. The lands were burning like in Australia. When I did read, I cried. And painted this to transcend how wildlife is fragile and very meaningful. I felt quite emotional about it...

Did you know that I discovered sled dogs and my way towards polar explorations and outdoor activities in forests in Poland, not above Polar Circle like Alaska or Greenland...? All of it has begun during my young hood - when I was searching for pure Greenlandic Dogs (from my mentor who has passed away, I am eternally grateful for him, that's how I discovered my love to Greenland dogs and whole Northern culture) that were stationed in mysterious Sled Dog Sanctuary in the heart of Biebrza.

It was very little, rusty house and huge forest around it, lots of adopted and retired sled dogs lived there, some from Spitzbergen and some rare wild horses. I fell in love in that place. I was 17 years old. Greta, the lady of that land and caretaker taught me many things.
She is very educated woman, but chosen to live in modesty and engaged in wildlife over civilised lifestyle. She was inviting children from poor and abusive families and engaging them to work with animals. Some were participating in dogsledding races. For them, sanctuary and sport was whole world and mental distraction. Intangible value.
She was participating in storks conversation.

Then she with her partner and her team of adopted sled dogs completed and won some major long distance races. With adopted dogs, which makes unbelieveable story! Those people from the woods are super exceptional people and are true and aware wildlife lovers. And so, they inspired me to pursue my pathway with passion towards animals, outdoor, dogsledding and nature

The fact that Biebrza lands are burning is results from the lack of conscious connection with nature.
The Polish villages (and not only, but in many countries) has lost bond ... it is difficult to say how long ago. It got replaced by zabobobs and folk pseudo-wisdom. Such as are burning grass fields. It was the burning that lit these lands, plus we had enormous drought. People from the villages went to the forest only in autumn, for mushrooms or for to collect wood whilst ignoring these young ecosystems. The forest, as a forest, did not interest them at all. There was not even a herbalist in the village, as it used to be. And today, from the story of my friend coming from wealthy village - said that much has changed that there is more plastic, more trash in the forest, more trash burns. People don't go to the forest anymore, now they drive quads instead. New rural entertainment. The grass burns all the time, and the fire brigade often goes out several times a day.
Drought. Meteorological, hydrological, hydrogeological. We have them all. Biebrza fields burn so easily because instead of being wet (especially in spring!), they are dry. Peat bogs could revive, get up from the ashes. But nature is getting harder to recover, at such a pace. And the animals have nowhere to run.
And so, there is a man everywhere ...

The original is for sale to support Charity Foundation for Biebrza - to help rescuers and restore vital lands.

It's even sadder when you realise that you have heard nowhere on news about this fire... no instead it's coronavirus this and that... who cares about the rest eh?

Exactly. Coronavirus (which is a lot less serious that most world problems that the world is facing with) is playing big role to cover uncomfortable issues. It's easy to blame "because of COVID"

I don't live near this area, but people from my country can be idiots. Our neighbours scared the roe deer out of the forest with a hunting dog, so the herd split up and we don't know where the rest is.
The remaining roe deer that were never afraid of people (although they kept their distance) now hide in the forest behind every little noise and can't graze peacefully.
In addition, they "accidentally" set fire to the meadow near the forest twice, the second time the fire fighters had to come and half of the meadow is burnt. They have only just moved in, and already so much damage, I really feel like breaking the windows in their newly built house. Of course, they did not admit that they set the meadow on fire and even tried to blame us.

I really hope they get the fires out and help the land recover. Raising awareness is always a big first step, so massive kudos to you for calling it out.
the world's in chaos right now... i really hope those who are willing to help begin to speak over those who are shortsighted and power hungry.
