Description Finally finished! I'd been wanting to make a horse plushie for a while, and now that I've improved my crocheting skills considerably, I decided to give it a try. I made up this pattern completely from scratch, and it wouldn't be easy to write it down--a lot of it was completely on the spot, deciding where to increase or decrease. As a result, the proportions are a bit odd, but I'm proud of it anyway!

I'm going to call her April, after a horse I used to ride back when I was taking riding lessons (which I hope to do again someday soon!) April was a really fun horse to work with, but more than a little nuts. She was about the same color as this, but with a coppery mane and tail, and ridiculously tall. She loved to jump and would nearly run away with you if you weren't careful, but I learned more from riding her than any other horse, and gained a lot of confidence, too! So I suppose a cuddly toy is a nice tribute, although she'd probably kill me if she knew she was being compared to something cute.

A few details: Made with a little more than one skein of Lion Brand Homespun, Sierra color (I was trying to use it up, but I had to get another ball, grrrr… ) and off-white Caron Simply Soft for the mane and tail. Oh, and the hooves are Homespun, but the Roccoco color. She's 11 inches tall, 16 inches from nose to tail, and stuffed pretty firmly, so she stands up pretty well although she's nice and squishy, too.

I'm now working on a mountain goat plushie, but work has stalled due to a major redesign of the pattern, which has resulted in me frogging a good chunk of the most recent work. Now I have to gather the courage to forge ahead…

Very lovely! I think your little mare is well-proportioned. I don't crochet, but I love to make my own plushie patterns. You did an excellent job!

Thanks! Not easy with crochet, but I figured out how to do the slight taper of the face, which worked pretty well.

WOW! you are so talented to be able to make up your own patterns. I admire that, as much as I do cooks, that don't use a recipe books.

You have presented this beautifully.

MuseSusan In reply to AdamsWife [2007-12-03 00:49:53 +0000 UTC]

You've just got to be willing to take a chance, and have a reasonable knowledge of how the techniques you use affect the finished product (in the case of cooking, how adding cornstarch or salt will affect the taste/texture/whatever of the dish; with crocheting, how increasing the number of stitches at a particular point will affect the shape).

Yes you need confidence as well as know-how

Thanks! I wish I had written down the pattern, but it was kind of fun to make decisions as I went.

I hate it when you have to buy more yarn to finish a project intended to use up said yarn

Otherwise, though, excellent work as usual

MuseSusan In reply to flutterbyfae [2007-11-26 21:01:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Yeah, I'm desperately trying to get rid of yarn, but every project that uses up some of my stash just requires buying more to finish it.

flutterbyfae In reply to MuseSusan [2007-12-01 15:00:10 +0000 UTC]

Mind if I suggest a solution? I've been knitting/crocheting for "[link] ">Warm Up America to use up my excess yarn and do some good in the process. They take small (7"x9") sections which makes it easy to finish off the odd leftovers from a skein or two.

Make sure to write down the pattern next time so you can make more if you'd like to!
I'd love to see a Pinto/Paint horse one but probably it would be a pain because of constant color change .

Hey, that's a great idea! I've never learned how to work multiple colors, but I want to. It might take quite a bit more planning ahead, but that would be good for me…

Oops, I meant to link to yours as an inspiration! I better go do that…

Actually, yours seems quite a bit more cuddly. But it was definitely the inspiration for me to try using Homespun for mine (I had wanted to make a horse for a while, but I didn't think Homespun would be very good for it--till I saw yours).

lol - thanks - i love the way your came out - its so much cleaner looking than mine. and.. i think its bigger - 11 inches tall? mines only like 6 >..<

mm- the homespun makes it really cuddley XD

MuseSusan In reply to ThyTemplar [2007-11-14 07:38:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I think I'm going to use Homespun for lots more toys--although it's a bit of a pain to crochet with, since it likes to split.
