Description Hey guys,

So recently I've been working on an eat3d tutorial teaching people how to get hard surface results similar to that of a traditional 3d package. It was just released so I figured I'd upload it.

You can find the tutorial here:

[link]

The tutorial covers a bit of the concepting, reworking, sculpting the final model, rendering with Vray, and compositing in Photoshop.

As for the design, I was very inspired by the Marine and the Firebat from Starcraft 2. I enjoyed that game a lot and loved the designs so i wanted to achieve something similar. Also I was trying to focus on maneuverability of the character it self. I wanted to create a mech that would have as little self collision as possible.

The programs I used for this were:

This is just the clay render straight from zbrush. I have a final render in my gallery.

Thanks and enjoy!

I know absolutely nothing of working in 3D.. but seeing this, makes me wanna know. I think your work is stunning. May I ask how long it took you from scratch - I mean, going from zero knowledge to the level of expertice you have today?

MikeJensen In reply to Sepiawolf [2011-04-18 04:07:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a ton man! I think I started playing with 3d in 2006 but I'm not entirely sure. It's all learned during hobby time. But these days I think the learning is faster for other people with all the resources available. Now I'm just trying to learn more traditional stuff like color theory to include it in my work, cause I think that people who have traditional knowledge are much better at 3d.

I would suggest picking a package (maya or 3ds max) picking up and tinkering with zbrush, and trying to learn a rendering engine (like vray).

Hope that helps! Thanks a ton! β™₯

Once you get hardsurface work done in Zb alone, do you use tradition poly/sub-d modeling method anymore?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MikeJensen In reply to nnq2603 [2011-03-23 23:17:45 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes subd is still very useful for modeling! It's important to know the strengths and weaknesses for each tool and abuse their strengths as much as possible!
