Description not sure if i like this one or not... taken at the laurel-snow pocket wilderness... same as --> [link] there is so much brown in the image - the trees, dead leaves, wood part of bridge... i had to work hard to get definition between them all... it was super cloudy that day so i was able to use a ridiculous shutter speed turning the water to pure mist... hence the title, which is fully: Healing Waters at Old Stone Bridge

hope you enjoy! critique requested!!!

This is a pleasing winter woodland scene.

The image is generally well structured, the foreground water and bridge above make two effective subjects and give a strong sense of familiarity.

The diffuse lighting akes the most of the available colour and prevents any distracting highlights.

Technically the shot has been tastefully processed and a fairly warm white
balance has been chosen, which is to my taste.

There are several ways in which this image could be improved. I suspect that the summer or autumn seasons would have provided a greater range of colour. In particular green foliage would have provided a nice contrast to the red/brow bridge.

The shutter speed selected calms the water, but I am not sure that this is the right situation to use the effect. A shorter shutter speed would have created a less static appearance to the water giving it better definition and sense of motion. It also looks like some of the highlights in the water have been blown. This should be avoided.

The darker branches at te base of the falls make a nice detail, but the larger brighter log is distracting to me and prevents the water flowing out the bottom of the image.

I find both side of the image distracting. Both the left and right side suggest that the bridge is longer that the section that forms the main part of the image. This suggestion is in my opinion unecessary. Cropping from the left and right allows a more focussed, simplified composition.

Whilst the scene has been well captured, it is a fairly commonplace spot, there is nothing exceptional in the image. For this reason I think it is particularly important to either: Offer the veiwer a new take on the scene or Capture the scene in such a way that there is little room for
improvement.

Overall this shot is technically good and well composed, but needs work in a quite a few areas.

Thanks Alex! I look forward to reshooting this image later in the beginning of summer to capture more green foliage to balance out the strong warm tones, and will definately try out your suggestions on cropping... I'm also glad you like my post work technique, no sharpening was applied! As for my shutter speed, I always enjoy injecting a little surrelism into my image and was trying to create a 'mystic' look as if the water has some 'healing' aspect to it...

Who knows... if you have another re-shoot competition, this may find its way to the entries!

no problem. Critiquing the images of others is actually a good way of exploring what you like yourself

I do understand that you took this photo in 09'
but I still love the photo a lot. Right when I saw the
thumb in my search, it pulled me in
I can also understand why you also were not sure
if you liked it or not, it's a busy scenery piece.
But so very beautifully filled with chaos & color!!
I think if it had been a sunny day it would have
made all the colors pop too much. The gray day
helped you out in that way. Amazing capture!

It's a very nice photo; you chose a good angle, but I think it could use some contrast
