Description
Even the titanic work of a living god succumbed to the tides of time. Much of the gargantuan Notochord was reduced to a derelict shell, a shadow of the great Tassalid Empire before its long decline. Empty, the vast structures remained to span the void, inspiring awe still in those pioneers who laid their eyes upon them. But of the magic these massive monuments promised, barely anything remained. And what little was left there, long forgotten and buried deep, was jealously guarded by the last paladins.
They were themselves remnants of older times amid these ruins, their task as old as an ancient prophecy. For an eon undisturbed in their slumber, they had become part of the mystery that surrounded the great creations of old. Drifting through the mists of the Verrho plains, they could be seen, black shadows with only the faintest trace of a signature. Very nearly all energy within them had dissipated and the old cores were dormant now, deep, deep at the heart of those vessels, endlessly far removed from the living, outer universe.

Their places of nearly eternal rest were the new frontier of exploration to the daring and young nations of the Pioneers. Like prodding needles, they invaded the calm, cold ruins of the Notochord and in their efforts to unravel mysteries, they awakened the wardens from their slumber.
In the century since the first founding of cities by the pioneers, more than a thousand expeditions of some kind were launched into the ruined wreckage of the Notochord, it crashed and broken parts lying on the planitia of the inner shell. In all this time, the countless souls devoting their lives to the cause of curiosity managed to chart great swaths of the derelict regions, and yet their efforts are lost in the great, vast ocean that is the mystery of the Notochord. Indeed, not even one managed to find the ruin paladin's true resting place, where there are certainly even older, more powerful guardians waiting.
