This little twerp started to follow him around sometimes when he wasn't with Kafald and Xipper, which was probably good for her sake.

She was bright and kind and had a playful spirit, and though he spat curses at her she wouldn't leave him the flick alone. She was an annoyance, but he did his best to ignore her. It wasn't like he was mean just for the sake of it, and doing something like crushing the other gro's spirit would do nothing for him, so he silently hoped she would get the memo and leave him alone.

Her name was Rosie, and he learned things about her despite really not caring to. Things like, she was an orphan just like everybody else in the Nook, and she picked out her name herself, and she thought it was really funny that they were both red and had named that started with 'R'. Ridley just rolled his eyes when she started to get excited about it, going on a spiel about, 'It's sooo cool that we have stuff in common! We must be fated to be friends!' while her little feather-tipped tail wagged profusely.

Sometimes she insisted on playing with him because, 'You're so quiet and you never have any fun, Ridley, you need to do something that's fun for once instead of sitting around!' Then he would suggest tag or hide and seek, and whenever he was 'it' he would just let her run off and sarcastically concede that she'd won when she would come find him hours later.

Somehow she never got that he was annoyed with her, which only made it all the more annoying. Didn't she get that he wasn't around here to make friends? He was just here because even if he cursed at Alma and all of the adults that had initially come by to adopt him, he was still given good food and a cozy place to sleep. His punishments of 'no desserts' because of his sailor's mouth were remedied by Kafald, so he could still satisfy his sweet tooth without needing to be a perfect little kid like Alma wanted.

He wasn't nice, and he didn't want to play with Rosie, or be her friend. And if he were a more cruel person he might have told her so, but something stopped him. She could play pretend all she wanted, and he wouldn't stop her. But the reality was that they weren't friends. They were never going to be friends. And he never had to lie to her and say that he was, because she assumed that all on her own.
