Description "We're getting new neighbors soon," Skylar's father said, peering out of the window. "Looks like they're moving furniture into the property pre-emptively. I haven't heard anything about them yet, though, have you, dear?"

Skylar looked over at his mom from where he sat amongst his toys on the floor, ear twitching in interest. "Not much, but I heard they're coming to town because of the local flora. Suppose they might be researchers or something like that? That would be exciting! It'll be nice to have others nearby who aren't farmers. No offense to the farmers around, though, all lovely people, but it will be good for Skylar to meet someone else that isn't from Wynsiph."

"I hope they have a wyngling for him to play with," Skylar's father said, nodding. "Maybe even a little girl, hm, champ?" He crouched in front of Skylar and smiled teasingly, ruffling his hair.

Skylar wrinkled his nose, shaking his head. "Girls are icky and no fun."

"Ohh, you say that now," his father chuckled. "But if you two get along you could be best friends, you know. And just wait 'til you get older. That is, assuming that they have a little girl. It may not be a family at all, but we can hope, can't we, Sky?"

A huff escaped the wyngling's mouth, but he nodded along anyways to make his parents happy. Always trying to make him make friends with girls when they were so gross and stupid! They always talked about crushes and tried to get too close to Skylar because, according to them, he was cute. He wasn't deaf, he'd heard the things they would giggle about him under their breath, but he never found and of them cute at all.

So, when the topic changed again between his parents, Skylar mumbled under his breath, "I hope they have a boy like me to play with."

When the time came for their neighbors to actually move in, the cart carrying the family and the rest of their belongings stopping outside of the row of houses one day, Skylar was not exactly enthused. If the new neighbors were a family with a little girl, he was dreading the hours he'd be forced to spend with her. Everyone knew girls were gross, why did his parents want him to be friends with them so bad?

But as it turned out, Skylar had nothing to worry about. He was staying away from the windows, hoping that if he didn't look, his worst anticipations about the newcomers would not come to light, so he was surprised to hear a knock on the front door.

"I think that's the new neighbors," his mom said, looking up from where she sat, working on crocheting a sweater. "Sky, will you get the door while I put this away? Just unlock it and tell them to come in."

"Yes Mom," Skylar answered, though he had to hold back a loud sigh. Moment of truth. Time to meet his new parentally proclaimed "best friend" if the neighbors had a kid. "Door's open," he called after unlocking it, stepping back.

His mother made her way to the entryway of the house just as the door cracked open, smoothing out her dress and giving the strangers who opened the door a sweet smile. She waved them inside, saying, "Come in, come in! You're the new neighbors, correct? Come on in and make yourselves feel right at home!"

While she was ushering them towards the living room, a little teal wyngling trailed after his parents into the house. Skylar was watching the parents file in to socialize and almost didn't notice the last wyngro to enter, but when the door closed his eyes dropped down to eye level to see who'd done it.

Almost immediately, he felt himself grow warm in the face, and he sat down, shuffling his front claws on the ground. His eyes were fixated on his own feet, watching the purple of his claws move as he tried to get rid of the nervous energy that suddenly filled him at the sight of the other wyngling. Wow, wow, wow, they actually had a son! But Skylar wasn't used to interacting with other wynglings outside of school hours, since he always went straight there and came straight back for extra studying, so he had no idea what he was supposed to say. The other wyngling looked a lot more wild than Sky, too, with messy, curly hair and fur going in every direction and leaves sticking to him. Skylar had no idea what to do to make a good impression now that he'd actually gotten his wish.

"Hey! Hey, are you the kid here? Hellooooo?" Skylar jolted to attention as he realized that while he'd been spaced out worrying, the other boy had been trying to get his attention. He grinned when he noticed Skylar had finally seen him and said, "Hey there, my name's Kalmia! What's yours?"

"It's Skylar," Sky got out, face getting even hotter. How could he just blank like that? Gosh, what a great first impression. "Skylar Seong. I-I do live here, yeah, with my parents, uh.... Shouldn't we get to the living room?"

"Nah, the grown-ups are talking and it'll be boring! I saw you have a big back yard, do you have a garden? We have one, or, we will, and I'm really excited to see what kind of things we can grow here!"

Skylar couldn't help but smile at how easily chatty Kalmia was, and for the first time he felt like he could understand, a little bit, why the girls in school always couldn't seem to help but call him cute. Wait, what? No, that wasn't right. Kalmia was just really enthusiastic about this, it seemed. Kalmia stopped when Skylar giggled, giving him a pout. "What, did I say something wrong?"

"No, no!" Skylar said quickly, shaking his head. "No, not at all, I've just never met a wyngling who likes plants so much! I didn't get a lot of what you said, so, um, if you want, we can go look at our backyard and play and you can tell me more about that stuff, but maybe a little slower?"

That got Kalmia's eyes to light up, and he was quick to nod. "Oh, yes, I'd like that a lot! Do you have any flowers? I noticed some bushes when I was looking over yesterday - sorry for snooping - but I couldn't tell if you had anything flowering."

"We do have some bushes that flower, but usually in the spring," Skylar chuckled. He listened to Kalmia go on with a grin as he led him outside, hoping that this would be the start of a wonderful friendship.
