Thank you! : )
I agree that 1-3 games were gold (tbh I only got to play 3 and a little bit of 1, but I treat 'em as a whole anyway xD). I have less problems with new Garret than I have with the new world presented and Erin. One, they took away this amazing ambience of pagans and the metal god. Two - I mean, come on - ERIN. Seriously, it's beyond me why Garrett would even associate with her at all.
As for Garrett's lines tho... I blame the modern game tendency to treat players as if they were stupid and spell everything out. With the line "how you steal it", I actually thought it was in-character. It's just us as players who tend to go for any loot aviable xD
I knoooowww.

Exactly! I mean, he DID get into the situation with Erin at the end of Deadly Shadows buuut the way she was developed in Thief IV makes me cringe. (He wouldn't let her grow up this way : I) And the whole primal thing with heh... ugh. And the weird creatures... seriously, zombies made more sense.
Hahaha, right! Damn, it's been so long since I played. Honestly tho, I'd believe the whole steal-for-the-thrill coz everyone needs something more than mere money. With not keeping all that stolen stuff... true, but da game developers' bible says thoe needst collectibles.
You don't have to remind me... the voice, AND the sense of humor. Seriously, I almost died at his "Oh, so this is the famous Garrett. I thought he'd be taller." lines XD

Yeeea. Coz, like, the Garrett in Thief IV is, but isn't the Garrett from the original series, right? I mean, even the city's different. So Erin is kinda, alluded, but not.
Hahaha I gotta! Got me some spoilers, playing TDS first n all, but I hear the stories in the first two games are just as cool! With the eye and the builder and pagans n everything. Geee, Garrett's voice alone could make a game awesome xD

I don't know what it is with this sudden popularity of revamps. In 100% they make stuff worse. Tomb Raider, Devil May Cry, Thief... seriously, people, seriously.
And that's the worst, yanno? I mean, at least the others make it clear whether it belongs to one canon or not. Thief IV pretends to be the same game.... but not be the same game? I mean, they keep the eye but get rid of the reason and come up with some new weird origin story. Feels like Spider Man or something - why reinvent stuff that's already been invented, eh?
Haha, yeeeah, I gotta get back to playing those (when I have time :c). Tbh I only stopped coz the sound didn't work. I assure you, Amnesia has NOTHING on thief w/o sound. Turning around to find a guard who's been attacking you for the last 10 seconds... yiiish! It's like finding something in the dark is watching you when you're suppossed to be the one watching.
Thanks for not spoiling! : )

Yeeeah. The plague/dying city is a common theme these days. I'd say it worked for Dishonored tho. For Thief... not so much. The whole Primal thing... meh. Gimme good ol pagans any day.
Yeeeah, I was kinda lazy about getting the patch (when I finally determined that the sound was, indeed, not working right. I mean, it's an old game - I wasn't sure if there was supposed to be one. Garrett's voice remained so that kept me confused xD). The whole reinstalling the game n stuff... also, other stuff to do, yadda yadda. And the fact that I reached the level where I'm anticipating zombies. I'm a big weenie for dark, scary and monsters (the orphanage in TDS... GOD. they did a good job with that in nuThief, too. scaring the shit outta me I mean), so yeah, not looking forward to that.
Muhahhahahh XD Well, it's nice to find somebody who appreciates this series. Many people can't get through bad graphics n all. I had high hopes for the new one bringing the series back but meh, it just ain't the same. I know, easy to criticize but still.

Yeea, I have physical copies. I'm pretty sure I can add them on steam tho.
Ha, I ain't the one playing the games on the highest difficulties, can't say about that much. I rather like the style judgement it gave you at the end of the mission xD Mine had absolutely no pattern other than being unpredictable.
There's something utterly wrong about trying to hide from the monsters when you're the one who's supposed to be the hunter. Coz if ya have to like, kill em all, that's not as bad. But thief is pretty good with not letting you simply kill them all off. Or at least, TDS was.
Ahahhahaah yes, the "I'm not gonna move" technique. Have you ever played Penumbra? Or Amnesia, for that matter. That's my favorite strategy for these games xD Never beat'em that way though. I wonder why...

It would be too nerve-wrecking to try and outrun the monsters for me. Coz like, you gotta be moving constantly, and fast, and you don't have time to scout your surroundings properly. Sneaking past is more acceptable. And running fast in case anything goes wrong xD As for killing, I'm talking mostly about TDS. Some of these times you just gotta use those fire arrows or holy water. Especially when the zombies sprawn right under you.

I think it's like a tactical utility corset or something. Solid Snake in MGS2 had one as well. Krauzer (spelling) of Resident Evil!~..... 4? I think 4. The one with Leon, had one as well.

Weeeelll the originals were flawed....very flawed. Thief Gold was an experiment where all the levels were mostly art levels before functionality was put in (and it shows because the levels are horribly designed *cough* Thieves Guild *cough*) .
Metal Age had better level design but overall was a boring game (boring as in it didn't really offer much in terms of moving forward. They took all that worked in DP and then just left it at that...add something else). Also the City was too clean looking....I guess Karras also made street cleaning robots. Frog eggs and Scouting orbs...pretty much useless...and how did the scouting orb connect to G's eye? Wireless? So they should have internet. Story wasn't too bad but yeah....was ok.
Thief Deadly Shadows is really underrated. I respect that they attempted to try new things in an effort to drive the series forward. That and the story was well done...probably the best story in the series so far. Gamall was a pretty good villain as well...just a crazy keeper.
all three have acceptable voice acting (with the exception of Russell). Everyone was either whiny, bland, or just didn't care. Listened to it enough to be sick of it.
Thief 2014 - I finished this game and played it to death and you know what? It's a worthy entry. The little tidbits and references are really nice and it is the same universe which makes it interesting (spoiler: it takes place several years in the future). Yes it too is flawed (sound mixing, needs a better map) but overall it's an enjoyable game. I hope they make more. (The primal is what powered the Keeper Glyphs of old...or rather the primal drew power from them). Romano Orizari is great as Garrett and I liked his performance better then Russell's job in Deadly Shadows. Oh yeah I went there. Just deadly shadows though....my fav Russell Garrett is Thief 2.
Those are my two cents.

Sadly, I can't speak much of the first two games since I had technical problems preventing me from playing them. Only recently did I solve those, alas, I have finals coming my way and every bit of time spared is welcome. I got to play only the first level of Thief Gold and all of Deadly Shadows. Suffice to say, the last game earned my eternal love for the whole franchise.
As for the voice acting, I loved Russel's work. Thief game without him isn't really a Thief game T_T Rarely does a voice actor have such a huge impact on my perceiving the character, but Russel's voice practically MADE Garrett who he was.
I can't wait to play the newest game. As for the "spoiler" - hey, those who played Thief III could gather as much from the trailers xP Girl shows on the age. The whole amnesia tho... I'm so sick of it, games tend to overuse it nowadays. Tho it might really make sense in the game, I don't know.
Thanks for putting those two cents in! : )

Who, whoooa. It... makes sense? Now I'm intrigued. Can't wait to get my finals outta the way and play the hell out of this game. Daaamn, why do they have to be so far away? On the other hand, it's good to have time to learn something before I take those ^^"
Yeah, it is. Such a shame I can't play this game right now but I really can't afford any more distractions than I already have. I hope we'll get to talk when I finally do : ) Definitely gonna fangasm over it, so it will show in my gallery when I've played it xP

Yes! Actually I've only played T3 in full, had technical problems with the others and haven't had time to complete them yet. Still, I love Deadly Shadows so much! Graphics were simple yet amazing in that old-game way, still awesome enough to enhance the gameplay. And VOICES, most of all voices. Especially Garret's but others', too.

Kalia24 In reply to LilayM [2014-02-22 20:08:02 +0000 UTC]
Yup, that's true - the graphics was poor (for today standards), but... who really care about graphics in that game?
And Garret's voice is really... fitting. I loved Lauryl too. And the Eye... And Pagans' weird speech... and... well, even stupid guards were well-voiced.
But the climate was the best - in the Cradle I got scared by my own shadow twice (true story) and after that I was crouching several minutes behind a wall when I first met a Puppet... God, that was... chilling... all this trembling... it looked like the creature was still tortured, even in undeath... After that part even running around with the Witch was a child play...
Btw - why do we speak English? xD

LilayM In reply to Kalia24 [2014-02-22 22:22:27 +0000 UTC]
I kinda go by different standard for old games, I can forgive them more - but there are old games' graphics, and then there are too old games' graphics. So I can't really say those were terrible - for me they're simple but charming : ) (1st game tho... those count as terrible XD)
Oh god, I don't even wanna remember the Cradle. Shit, that game gave me the creeps with a mere glimpse of supernatural creatures. Like, they were only rumoured to exist at first... And then you have it. Because of that now when I'm playing the first game, I'm shitting my pants before the zombies even showed up. IF they show up.
Eeeer... coz I speak English by default? xD On dA I keep assuming everyone can more or less speak english, so I go by that language.

Niby trochę jeszcze hiszpańskojęzycznych jest, sporo francuzów i garstka niemców. No i włosi. Z w/w to tylko francuskiego ani be ani me. Włoski niemalże jak hiszpański xP W sumie francuski też z tej rodziny, ale dużo inny.

The creators did say he has a feminine side (not saying he is weak or anything). Which would make sense, since he loves to steal jewels, art, etc.
They said this in a podcast (not sure you listen to them but here is the link just in case. community.eidosmontreal.com/ Stealing Time Thief podcast Episode 2 )

If I were a thief I'd much rather steal jewels and art than other, heavier valuables. And his feminine side has nothing to do with the way he, let's put this like this - perceives the world. It's all about the elegance and efficiency of movement. Let's not put there things that ain't there, shall we?
But dang, he's still a man sporting a corset. Most delightfully, I daresay...
Meh, anyone tries to call feminine weak to my face, I shall have my delicate feminine fingers elegantly connect with their face, leaving a lovely round mark in all the pretty shades of purple. (sorry. pet peeve)
And thanks a bunch for linking that podcast, it was most enlightening! Kinda long at times but definitely worth it.

I know what you mean, but I look at it like this is a new retelling of the franchise (although, fans of the original series may disagree). I adore the first three, and I am looking forward to this one, even though many things have changed (like the voice actor D: ), I will purchase it and rave like a fangirl once again.
I do like that you pointed out he is wearing a corset; no one else can pull off a corset like Garrett (no pun intended).
As for the cape thingy, as it was stated in Disney's The Incredibles, no capes on superheroes!!! Thieves, go ahead!
