Description To date, the Congo Bay-owl is known from only two specimens. The type-specimen was collected in 1951 and a second specimen was mist-netted in 1996, both in montane gallery forests in East Central Africa. All aspects of its biology are virtually unknown.

This thing could be extinct, IMHO

This species actually occurs in one of the best preserved (and least explored) habitats in Africa, "thanks" to constant political unrest in the region.

Where on earth did you find references for this species?!

The second specimen was thoroughly photographed before being released (although the obviously stressed individual was fluffling out its facial feathers thus concealing its frontal shield which led some authors to move it to genus Tyto ^^)

I've seen this photo www.edgeofexistence.org/birds/… and a tiny thumbnail what looks like another photo of the same animal, but never more than that. Where did you find these photos? I'd love to see them! *o*

I found the photos in an old paper copy of Le bulletin de l'ICCN (Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature) dating back to December 96. I suppose that English language reports of the Itombwe expedition (Feb-June 1996) should be available online since it was co-funded by the Wildlife Conservation Society.
