I like how you erased an "aura" around his head, to help it stand out from the background. When you do that, however, don't forget to capture the wavy flow of the silhouette. It wouldn't be rounded like it appears on the back of his head. Also, the lighting on the hair is too concentrated. Think of it like an accordion that's too compressed; allow it to expand and spread across the length of his hair.

A few simple tips:

  • Draw a light outline of the shape of the head; a framework on which to arrange the other elements of the portrait. When the lines of the frame are right, it really helps with the measure and proportions.
  • Start lightly. There's nothing you can't fix when you press lightly, but you know what a P.I.T.A. it is to fix a hard-pressed spot. Subtlety is key. Even a faint application of charcoal can be used to great effect. For shading (under the left eye, for example) use a light layer of charcoal, rather than solid lines, to define the bottom eyelid. As for lighting on the hair just above his forehead, some sparse, light strokes of white charcoal can be just as effective as a large sweep.

Your progress is astounding; these are great results and practice for a few hours work. Remain fearless!

first of all i like this. i think that you avoided some of the pitfalls that artists fall into when first starting out drawing portraits. the contrast is great, this drawing really stands out. but it can't all be praise right? it's not much of a critique without some criticism as well. first of all, i hope that your ref pic was bigger than the link. you can't expect to get much detail with a small ref pic. to me, this picture needs to be overall... "sharper". details are important. if you look at some of the better pencil or charcoal portraits on here, they have excellent contrast and are highly detailed.
when i draw with charcoal i use the unwrappable ones(way easier) and i sharpen them manually with a razor blade. i get them very, very sharp. no artist can produce high quality charcoal work with blunt pencils. i'm looking at the time you spent on this: 2 hours.
to me, that's just not enough time to get a refined piece no matter what your skill level. art can't be rushed or it just won't turn out the way you want it to. i would rather have a dozen high quality drawings for my portfolio than hundreds of basically sketches.
with all that said i think for your second charcoal portrait you are making great strides. you've avoided a few common mistakes and just need to spend a little more time on your drawings. keep it up! i hope to see more from you.

and what? /checks the reference pic
omg i put up the wrong one ;__;
i assure you, i had a bigger reference than the one i linked. i have a better one in my computer, i just didn't want to put it on PB and link it since i'm lazy D;
i googled john bonham and just got the pic that was the one i used~ but i seem to have gotten the smaller one : O
oops.

and yeah, I try to sharpen my pencils a lot. C: i'm just a little peeved since my sharpener broke right after this picture and my
cousin took my x acto knife and never gave it back yesterday...
but thank you for telling me all this, it helps a lot. <3

i see, but i'm not sure if my time was accurate. i think i put that it wasn't accurate in the description, but i'm not sure.. ahaha
i spent 2 hours straight on it, definitely, but i put it down and started fixing up little things gradually. all those little fixes probably come to about an hour or two, i never keep track of time, ahaha~

oh, that's good! i'm glad a great artist like you thinks so. C:

Ahh you draw these so quickly! : D but they still come out so amazing!

I really like the shines in the hair on this one c: And I also like how you keep the hair from blending in to the background ;D

The shadows on the skin are really well done too : D I love how you shade noses so well!

I'm sorry I can't critique...but if I could offer a suggestion, the area in between the left eye and eyebrow seems a little smudged...if that was intentional, I'm sorry :c I'm not very good with realism >u<

I also am really impressed at how well you work with just black and white...you get so many shades from those two colors and it looks like a whole new spectrum. The latsy spectrum 8D But regardless, I like the look/feel from it in these tones. c:

All in all, I think this is really well done! Your work never stops amazing me, keep it up!

omg i'm glad you noticed that
because i had a perfect eye there, and i smudged it while grabbing for some water. it smudged so bad i couldn't erase it. so, i panicked and asked my older cousin what to do (she's amazing at art) and she was like "shit dude you fucked up. try covering it with white charcoal and maybe redraw it"
so i did that
and i layered the white charcoal like insanely and it still came out weirdddddddd ahaha
but it's good you noticed it

thanks~! it's just my amazing art teacher. she's taught me so much in just one semester.. ogod ;;

Sure lol If I can think of anything.

I personally think it's easier to paint in B&W because than you can fix colors easier if you make a mistake & sometimes, your mistakes aren't very THERE unlike with color, but color is fun.

Ahaha, thank you! I'll do it tomorrow, I'm pretty tired. Just remind me. XD
