I mean... digging up ancient obscure stuff was how a lot of classic memes started, wasn't it? Like, Never Gonna Give You Up was a legitimately popular song purely on its own merits when it came out, but that was long before 4chan started using it as a replacement for wheeled wooden duck toys that were themselves only a meme due to an autocensor that was doing a dumb. (Yes, that's the real origin, as far as I can tell)
