If only he knew his little leaf would not stay with him...

I feel like Thranduil got ice cold after the passing of his wife, and therefor ignored Legolas as he grew up. We can see in the Hobbit movies that Thranduil finally reached out to his son, realizing what he'd been doing all those years. I feel like after that their relationship improved greatly, and that Thranduil was open for the thought of loving his son as he should again.
I think their whole history and the way the wife/mother's death affected them is really beautiful but heartbreaking. I'm glad there was that scene in the Hobbit movies to finally break the ice between the two.
edit: Don't mind me, just delving into some older art, as it's really beautiful. >u<

Do you think so? Sadly I had the impression that their relationship is damaged beyond repair. They didn't really bond at the end, it was more an indirect sorry from Thranduil andΒ Legolas never went back to mirkwood.
This is more a speculation but Thranduil seems in genereal an aloof and colder character (some people simply are like that) and after all the tragedy with his wife but also his father (seeing him dying on the battlefield) he seems incapable for deep emotional connections.

I don't think that everything was just fixed between them after that. I do believe that Legolas did not return for a long time, but that Thranduil realized what he had missed out on, and would, whenever he got the chance, try a bit harder to get back into his son's life. Not just like that, but in due time. It would take a long, long time, since Thranduil isn't used to it, and Legolas have lived without a parent figure for so long, and barely knows what affection is at that point. But I like to think that eventually, they got closer to be a real family. Not super, super close, but closer than before at least.
But still, that both Thranduil and Legolas struggle greatly with deeper connections.
On another note, when we see Legolas in LOTR we see a completely different Legolas. I like to think that from the people around him he had learned to be more friendly and changed his view on friendship and such. Because he is so much happier and open in LOTR. I like to think that that is partly Aragorn's doing.
I know this is not in the books, but since Thranduil, at the end of The Hobbit Triology, says to Legolas that he should go and find the Dunedain, I want to believe that he did. But at the point in time of the Battle of the Five Armies, Aragorn would be about 11 years old. Possibly, when/if Legolas found him in Rivendell, the child would eventually grow on him, teaching him to be more human (aka more open to emotions). And that they overtime built a strong bond of friendship. I don't know, that's just how I'd like to think.
That comment was from July 2016, so I've spent alot of time thinking about this. Hopefully you can tell, hahah

I always thought of Thranduil "as hard as stone" when maybe he's not so heartless after all. There pictures changed my mind

Β I tend to think of him as a terribly hard-headed king β¦ and arguably one of the most sensible people in The Hobbit Trilogy, even if he is the living incarnation of everything everyone else in Middle-Earth resents about Elves!

I love this so much. It makes me sometimes think that Thranduil didn't want to help Thorin because it could mean putting his little Legolas in danger.

I agree completely with you about Thranduil! I bet he's loving and strong willed, yet patient and caring like many others, and like how his father was said to be in Silmarillion, and in the Unfinished Tales.
That and great picture^^
