Black Swordsman Guts is actually my favorite of his "phases", more so even than say Golden Age/Hawk Raider or the Berserker ArmorΒ GutsΒ

Precisely. I feel that it's in his Black Swordsman phase that Guts comes across as the most monstrous at times; yet it works because it reflects the idea that he pretty much hit rock bottom. Starting then with, say, during the Conviction Arc, he finally begins to regain some of that lost humanity

His life is constantly surrounded with despair, as a human his instincts is to survive. in my perspective guts strength lies on Casca as she is the only person which keeps his will to carry on. But his love for Casca and his lust of revenge to kill griffith makes him weak to make the right decisions. He truly is a fascinatiing character.
