Jeff, this is an astounding piece! I am serious as the day is long! 
Only a lunatic would try to do this manually. You have created a real masterpiece.
Let me explain my reasoning:
The M3D bulb is aligned so precisely that you are getting excellent symmetry.
The repetition of the design is perfect on both sides.
The palette creates an exceptionally rich 3D environment, and well displayed in the alignment of the lights and the depth from the camera.
It glows! And then it glows some more!
The shapes make more coherent and repetitive shapes, within another set of shapes. They are apparent but team together to add a pull of interest.
The palette is so well coordinated that one expects the objects to start moving almost instantaneously when it first draws the eye into its intriguing complexity.
And there are a thousand other reasons I cannot put to words. So, simply amazing!

Yeah! We do not see the inner workings of software. And program size is no indication of how complex it is or how much of the code will be executed, or even how much data will actually be read, processed or written. I love digital!
I am glad I do not have to manually put pixels on each image, in all cases! a bit of silicon and copper make wonderful extensions of the fingers and hands.
