Description
For over a century, relations between the human kingdom Dyrrfjothr and the dwarven kingdom Virngarom had been tense. It was a cold war, with no actual battle except for the occasional skirmish, but it could happen at any moment.
One day, the human king Ennrum Gramersson, also known as the Feathered King, was out on a hunting trip when they encountered a Niddragr, a type of dragon not uncommon to these lands. The creature had cornered a dwarf who was fighting for his life. Not hesitating, the King and his entourage of hunters charged at the lizard and drove it off, saving the dwarf's life. The dwarf was grateful to the king and offered to repay his kindness, but the king refused graciously.
The dwarf was the son of a thane and soon the Dwarven king Irrokk Kranndremnokk heard about the deed.
Several months later, a Dwarven delegation, headed by king Irrokk himself, met with king Ennrum at the human king's castle. The dwarfs presented the humans a proposal of peace and a gift in form of a beautiful sword, as was their tradition. The weapon was of excellent Dwarven craftsmanship, with lines of gold embedded into the weld-pattern of the blade. The name "Morning's Edge" was engraved in Dwarven runes.
Amazed by the beautiful weapon and touched by the gesture, king Ennrum placed a vow upon the blade: "I, King Ennrum Gramersson, known as the Feathered King, king of Dyrrfjothr, vow to raise this blade only to protect the kingdoms of man and dwarf! May this blade never taste the blood of any good man or dwarf, and may it rather shatter like glass!"
From this day forward, the two kingdoms lived as neighbors in peace, until king Ennrum died and his son, Ennbarn Ennrumsson took the throne. However, Ennbarn was not like his father. He envied the dwarfs for the many riches they had hidden away deep under the mountains of their home. He began to plot and eventually went to war against Vingarom.
Once the human army had reached the Dwarven city and breached the gates to their stronghold, Ennbarn personally entered the throne room and, wielding the sword of his father, challenged king Irrokk. Although still a formidable warrior, the dwarf was already old and no longer als strong as he used to be. That and Ennbarn was an excellent swordsman who had trained the art of swordfighting ever since he was able to hold a wooden sword.
They fought and eventually Ennbarn managed to disarm Irrokk. He placed the tip of Mornings Edge at the dwarf's chest to run him through. However, when he thrust, the blade shattered into a thousand pieces. Irrokk, seeing Ennbarn left with nothing but guard and grip, used the human's moment of confusion and quickly threw a throwing axe at him, killing him instantly.
Since Ennbarn had no heirs, it took a while for another human king to take the throne. The dwarfs offered to reforge Morning's Edge with the grip and guard that still remained, but the new king refused. He argued that the broken sword was of much greater symbolic value, as it proved that Ennrum's desire for peace had remained even after his death.
----------
Morning's Edge was inspired by a video by Tyrell Knifeworks. They made a knife with a layer of dark steel for the edge, sandwiched by two thin layers of gold and two layers of damascus. Looked pretty awesome and I wanted to creatra sword based on this idea. The design of the guard is a recreation of Skyrim's steel sword because I thought it kind of fits the theme and I suck and I couldn't come up with a nice looking knot design myself.
BTW, if anyone knows where I can find high-resolution images of actual damascus/pattern welded steel that can be used for materials (no filter stuff, that never looks real), please tell me.
