It is interesting, really…
The weight of a photo on the perception of the world.
Especially, perhaps if there aren’t really that many photos around.
Meaning that you will spend a lot of time looking at the few fotos available.
The visual is important to us after all.

After a while these fotos burn themself into your mind.
This, you tell yourself, is how the world looks, there is no question about it.
Take our solar system:
Jupiter for instance, is a red gas giant, with prominent streaks, and a storm visible from space.
This is what you have seen in the photo.
This is what is true.

Deep down of course you know that things aren’t quite so simple.
The ring of Jupiter for instance, hardly showed up on any photo.
Not legibly anyways.
Yet, you knew it was there.
Or did you?

Then, of course, the Webb telescope is put to the task of capturing the giant.
And return in tones of blue, with a thin ring clearly visible.
The world is turned on its head.

The photos of Saturn show rings glowing so brightly the planet itself almost sinks into the black background.

Then came the turn to Neptune and Uranus.

You pictured them in your mind as two rather nondescript blue marbles, ice planets, one of them practically rolling its way around the sun. If you are lucky, you may have picked up on the fact that they too have rings.
Then the photos from the Webb telescope ticks in…
And you remember that ice does in fact reflect sunlight.

So. were the earlier photos wrong?
Surely not.
But try taking a photo with an instant camera in bad lighting.
Look at the result.
Is it wrong?
Does it capture all the details though?
Now picture yourself building your world image from that Polaroid.
