Description Okay, I'll admit it: I will never master watercoloring, but ITS JUST SO FUN so I don't really care!

Here is Caranthir, the fourth son and the fifth Feanorian I am painting. I'm actually rather impressed with myself. I usually abandon silly projects like these but it seems like I might actually go through with it. Only three more sons to go... (and maybe a mother!!!) (okay now I have to paint Nerdanel as well, damnit)

So with this portrait I really tried to work on contrasts and to use the colors and wamrth as an effect. It was hard as crap, but I'm actually surprisingly happy with it. Though it is only an ipad photo, it doesnt do the original painting any justice at all.
And the background sucks, but I had a lot of fun experimenting with the colors. The lightning was certainly an experiment, and I cant say its perfect, but I do like it.

I feel like I learn so much with each of these I make.
Oh and Billy Magnussen inspired me as a model. (Btw I think that is one of the prettiest faces I have ever drawn, and certainly painted!)

So Curufin next...

very beautiful face, i like that you are not afraid to use many different colors on the skin, it looks very good. and also you choose colors fitting for caranthir

Oh i feel faces have so many colors, if you study them in different lights, and for this drawing I was very inspired by the oil work of a few artists on Instagram where they subtract the warm and leave only the cold shades, and yet you can see how many hues of colors the skin contains. This is a very good example of what I mean: www.instagram.com/p/BCgcnbzqm-… and I just get captivated looking at it!! I wish I knew oil painting..
But thank you very much for your sweet comment, and I hope you can forgive my late reply, school is very demanding and leaving me no time for art or private time..

thank you for that link. i don't see many colors, when i look at a face (or at other things), but i enjoy looking on pictures of those who do. i also like oil paintings and i would like to try it someday but i feel you need some space to do it and i live in a small flat. also i don't want to buy all the necessary things just to try it.
don't worry about replying late (i do it all the time) and good luck with the school

Oh yes I agree, I would love to try out oil, but as of right now I try to master water colors as well as it can be done I feel very restless when it comes to my artistic experience, and I just want to try more and more. I also want to try very much facial modelling in clay, but that too is a lot of expuiptmemt so I'll wait a while with it!

I agree with EEHills, you certainly will master them if you enjoy them and keep at them. A suitably dark portrait of 'the Dark'-est of the Seven Sons. Actually, he looks a little arrogant and cocksure too, which is about right! Nice work on the lighting on his left cheek in particular

Thank you so much, I am honoured you think so! and I will aboslutely keep working on it, as watercolor has really shown me a whole new dimention of my art, and I am afraid Im a bit obsessed and terrified at the same time! ^^'
I wish I had a scanner to show this painting properly, this poorly edited photograph really swallows up the depth of it, but I am still very glad you like it!

That's the perfect description of watercolour - it induces terror and obsession in equal parts! I've been in its grip for a long time now, and I still surprise myself and learn new things every time I apply the pigment to the paper I hope you continue to enjoy the crazy ride - imperfect scan or not, your talent and potential is evident!

PS. I forgot to thank you for watching me on FB And I also wanted to ask how you like the UK, since you're not from here but are living here at the moment ?

That is very true! Unfortunately I havent started a new watercolour portrait, yet I anticipate to paint Curufin next as a part of my Fëanorians series. I have been working on and off on a large traditional drawing of them all and its taken all my attention for the last month, as well as school just keeps me barely floating, so art has been slightly deprioratized lately, which I cannot stand. I really urge to paint again, so I hope I get more time soon!

And thank you, I take it as a huge compliment, especially coming from a talented painter as you!

Oh You're welcome, and yes I finish my Bachelor in Southampton this year. Though I am a true Anglophile, Southampton and especially the Uni is not great. I find myself feeling a bit suffocated, as I'm used to Oslo, which is a MUCH larger city then Southampton, though again much smaller than London. And yeah Uni is just draining all my power and will to live at the moment, with our tutors hardly supporting us in our bachelor project and also we have so many extra assignments, and Im not used to having to work like that. In Oslo we would focus completely on finishing one project before we moved on to the other, with much more intense work days but also much more effective. With this sort of work I find myself with little inspiration or motivation to do any of it, and it feels terrible... Im sorry, I did not mean to unload on you like that, but I am very frustrated atm!

But culturally and socially I completely love England. The people are just so nice and talkative (which says a bit as Norwegians are terrified to say anything to anyone we dont know in fear of insulting them lol). Every year or so I go to London with my family for a Christmas shopping weekend, and I absolutely LOVE London. We usually stay near Oxford Street so the culture and shopping is fantastic. I am also raised in the backseat of a Morgan as my father is a classic car enthusiast and spent most of my summers as a child driving through europe and mostly English countryside, so I have such strong ties to this country. I just think that with my current situation with school and I spent most of the fall being sick so that didnt help, and it all just put Southampton in a very bad light for me, which I regret. The south coast is usually so beautiful, so I hope with better weather and hopefully some better days at Uni it will feel better.

Gosh, sorry for rambling... but I hope I answered your question ^^'

What do you do other than art?

Hi Iggy - sorry for the late response Ohh, that Feanorian piece sounds fun. I completely understand though the lack of time, especially on large pieces that require a lot of thought and attention. I have so, so many old unfinished piece lying around from years back, it really is rather pathetic. Sometimes I wish I could just paint, and do nothing else; I suppose that's the dream of every aspiring artist, but not likely to come true except for a very select few. In any case, I've had a mind to do a 'Princes of the Eldalië' series for a long time now, encompassing individual portraits of all of the Three Houses. But who knows when that will ever come about ...?

We've talked a bit since about Southampton and studies, but I hope things are improving on that front. I guess it's just one of those cases where you need to get through the final months, and all will be well on the other side. As you know, I'm in a similar case (I should be submitting in the coming weeks ), but even then I'll have to have my oral defence, then push myself to publish some journal articles, and then apply for post-docs. Fun times. I think it's normal, though, to flit between inspirational days, and others which are the opposite, and lacking in motivation. Especially if you're artistically inclined, which I think is a synonym for bi-polarity

Interesting to read that you love England so much, but I guess visiting so much and driving to and fro from a young contributes to that. What a cool way to grow an affinity for a country Yes, the S. Coast can be very beautiful; I've studied at Sussex University, so I lived in Brighton for a number of years. I'm now back in Surrey now though, so near enough to London, but who knows where I'll be off to next? Oxbridge, perhaps?

As for my interests outside art? Well art, you see, is a very big part of who I am, as I also play music, guitar, like to travel and so on. Even my PhD in history is, for me, a 'creative outlet'. I love the construction of a narrative, or a piece of music, or a painting, and seeing it through to completion You surely understand, what with your own art and of course film! Anyway, just to say again that this is a great portrait

The watercolour work is actually rather good. You're doing yourself an injustice there. I like the light from the lightning on the side of Caranthir's face. That is very good. I'm a little confused what the lightning is grounding on. It looks sort of like a hill with trees but it isn't really clear.

Thank you so much for saying that, but in my own eyes I feel like I still have a long way to go before I become comfortable with it, but it does not mean at all that I do not enjoy it, I rather love it, and I am eager to continue learning, that is all!^^ And I am really glad you like the painting. It was hard to get the hues and lights I wanted to create the contrast (and its rather gruesomlooking in this photographic version) but I feell like i managed it somehow how I wanted it, and thats a step in the right direction!^^ And yes, the background was significantly quicker done than the portrait, as I wanted it to have a specific style, tho I failed somewhat. It was supposed to be a forest, yes!

Absolutely breathtaking! I think he is your best Feanorian so far! His face looks beautiful, noble and a little bit dangerous. But it's not only the case of fairness of his face. The colours and the use of contrasting hues is pretty impressive in this one! Wonderful work, my dear!

I dont even know what to say to that... THANK YOU!! And he is my best Feanorian so far, definitely, but I think thats also due to my actual technique with watercolor evolving while I work at these, they are after all the first serious aquarelle paintings Ive ever done! ^^ Because of the crappy iphone picture the darkness level is a bit tuned up compared to the original, but the colors and contrasts are pretty much correct! But I am very happy that you liked this so, sweetie!^^

Love the purple! The colours look perfectly fine to me! The shadows on his face, especially around the mouth look great, very realistic and still interesting.  All that I would work on is the thunderstorm; lightning bolts from afar are finer, thinner.

Gosh i struggled so with his mouth, so I am very glad you like that part in particular. Thank you! And yes I know I messed up the storm, I have yet to truly grasp backgrounds and how to do them correctly!

I think you’re fine! Finding things you like and others which you would like to improve (and also know how you could improve) is very good if you want to learn more. You can be both proud of what you did and find something new to learn .
