I have some very mixed feelings concerning climate change because I live in an area where coal defines much of the culture. This is also one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in terms of the natural surroundings.

I created this painting with both sides of the issue in mind. We have to preserve our environment, but there are also a lot of people who depend on this resource which is plentiful and where most of our electricity comes from. Lots are worried that their entire way of life, economy and culture will die in the wake of things like "cap and trade".

After being around coal, the idea that much to do with it will ever be totally "clean" seems unlikely, however the idea that this resource will not play a big part in our future is as unlikely.

The lightbulb has always been a symbol of ideas, so I included this symbol prominently in the imagery. My hope is that we can come up with safer ways of using this resource in the future, that projects like the Appalachia America Energy Research Center [link] make a difference in the way we produce energy from fossil fuels.

The ground for this painting was an older canvas that I was not fond of and recycled.

Thanks. We are predicting another boom in the industry post election here... There should be a better way than all the big booms from the explosives. Wild process to watch though.

Very cool! I understand your ambivalence! It reminds me of a mixture of dark forces and light at the same time.

It's good to have a balanced pov on such issues. I know that much has been done in turning coal directly into natural gas, and that coal and shale can be turned to synthetic crude in some circumstances. It's good that you placed that link up.

Your painting does show a great juxtaposition of elements here. There's a sense of confusion and chaos yet hope present.

I'm so glad the message I intended come across. I really wrestled with this one... I tWas almost painful to execute.

Lots of useful things from coal... Also lots of disappearing mountaintops, messy repercussions etc.

Great image..I like how darkness and lightness is merged in this piece..you find yourself viewing both sides equally, just in the painting strokes.
