Rick Perry (Running for US Prez even though he wanted Texas to secede last year) actually did this today.

Yes, I was just reading up on him. He seems somewhat nuts to me. And don't get me wrong; I'm a church-going handgun owner and I have no problem with capital punishment for certain types of people, and so on, so I'm not exactly a "pinko" (although I do have socialist leanings too), but so many of the "conservatives" from the USA seem to simply be insane or retarded. I mean, what's with that Palin gal, for example? She hardly seems able to form a coherent sentence but some people want her to run the country?!
I don't mean to insult your great country, man. We've got lots of absolute losers in our government too (don't even get me going on our current Prime Minister!) but I just can't even imagine them saying some of the things we hear from south of the border!
Anyhow, thanks for the faves, Mark. I'm going to go check out that last page!

HAHA! I am often frightened and appalled by some stuff that has been going on here, but I've noticed that I get farther with wine than vinegar when talking to folks that don't see things the way I do. When I'm in my home State of Virginia, I am considered a Pinko Commie, and here in the West I am a Right Wing Redneck. I'm just trying to be a good boy every day. Don't worry, we will get back on the goodfoot sooner or later. You may find us to be unreliable for a while though.

I keep seeing ads about big energy companies "caring" about the environment, and saying the whole green trend is gonna help their bottom line. really?????!!!

Ha, ha. I know. The thing is I guess some people fall for it. Corporations only change when they HAVE to to save the only thing they care about: their cash flow.

I don't think the oil companies liked them! They are finally coming out though since people are demanding them and even the corporations FINALLY have to listen to customers - at least in theory.

They were killed because it costs $120,000 for an electric car, and 20-1,000 for a gasoline car

Yeah, but we all know electric cars are going serve a very niche market. i seem to recall someone from TED giving some pretty awesome solutions to sustainability, and sharing his frustrations that nobody wants to cooperate. Heh. Living in a developing country, the very idea of sustainable living is a joke. Smoke and trash right in our backyard. For shame.

The world is not fair, that's for sure and the USA definitely takes much more than it's share of resources. We Canadians are not much better though (probably worse in some ways) so I can't really point fingers. I grew up VERY poor by Canadian standards (no bathtub, shower or indoor toilet) so I do at least have some small idea of what it's like for less fortunate people.
One thing people need to realize is that governments are still part of the problem but corporations have become so powerful that they essentially OWN governments and that's becoming the real danger because money is their only god and we can't vote them out. It's too bad that so many people still believe unfetered "free enterprise" is great and government control (which is theoretically directed by the voters) is bad "socialism". We have plenty of democratic socialism here in Canada and it works much better than letting the corporations and banks enslave everyone!

Hey Huwman, took some time to ponder what you said (and drew some stuff in the process). Nice to meet a Canadian! Sheet man, where did you grow up? Sounds awful! How the heck did you manage? There is a sizable community of Filipinos living in Canada, due to the higher quality of life. I almost lived there once meself, but my dad backed out on his job offer. *Sigh*
I have to agree with you on the extent of power corporations have on America. Where I live, I've always admired countries like Singapore which I believe is similar to how you described Canada to be. (though they may be stricter) How screwed up is America right now I wonder? So little information is conveyed in the mainstream media these days that I stopped watching. We have kind of the same deal in the Philippines though, where mega-corporations run by corrupt politicians, shrewd Chinese and Spanish businessmen basically run the country. Kind of sad really, but hey, all in the name of capitalism the AMERICAN WAY!!!

It's fairly unusual for a white person of my age (I'm 48) to have lived like that, although it was pretty common a couple of generations back. This was in a place called Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan and it was actually a great way to grow up even if it sounds tough. we were close to the land and a lot of the "hardship" actually kept us in good shape. I am richer now but no happier - and definitely fatter!
And, yes, we have lots of Filipinos in Canada. My friend (who is also my printer) is married to a Filipino nurse. I suppose we are all sort of immigrants here anyway, except the Indians, of course.
Anyhow, good talking to you. Keep up the good work.

I know - it's unheard of! Part of it is the beauty of doing stuff on the internet since I'm doing this work for people that are in or near Vancouver BC, which is a big city with BIG graphic artist rates but I'm in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (seriously), which is "just a stone's throw from Bugtussle" (as the Beverly Hillbillies used to say) and where rates are much lower. This means I can charge more than I'd get here but the client is probably still getting it for less than the going rate there, so we're both kind of snickering behind our hands at what a great deal it is. A real win/win.
The trick is getting the clients in faraway/pricier places, of course.

I had a friend recommend that I try and find galleries in Europe or Australia to try and sell my work last year since the American dollar was so weak. He said I would have been able to demand higher prices for my stuff.

Okay, that's a bit more complicated if you'd actually be sending material objects to other countries. One of my kids just got back from Australia a while ago and if you could get art prices in line with what they apparently pay for hamburgers, etc., you'd be doing okay. He says it was terribly expensive "down under".

It was a suggestion that never went heeded. Never know, though, might do it someday, even though I Have doubts about sending a piece of art overseas, or even a few states away for that matter, and expecting to get paid for it when it sells. I sent something to California last year for a show and never heard back from the guy. Can't reach him!

Apparently not that uncommon of an occurrence from what I've been told by a couple of other gallery artists. He contacted me here on DA and asked me to participate in a show and I figured what the hell! Whipped it out and sent it off and haven't been able to reach him since. Just write it off I guess.

That's still pretty awful even if not uncommon. Do you have an email, website, phone number, street address or anything for this guy? With my temper I'd probably plan my next vacation around wherever he is and hunt the bastard down. I'm actually getting too old for that stuff but, man, that's low. So you figure it was just incompetence or a premeditated scam?

ATLbladerunner In reply to Huwman [2010-12-04 14:47:44 +0000 UTC]
All I had was the email address he had here on his DA page, although I found articles that mentioned what I think is the gallery through a google search. I don't necessarily think it was incompetence or a scam, it may be as simple as trying to run a gallery in this crappy economy. I know a lot of smaller galleries have gone out of business, could be the reason there too. If he was doing well I would be able to find more links to his gallery that weren't a couple of years old, I guess.

Yeah, like I said, I've heard this story from lots of gallery artists. Luckily it wasn't a very expensive piece or something I spent a lot of time on. And who knows, maybe I'll get a check out of nowhere from the guy if he sells it. Think positive, right?
